it's beautiful except wtf are the pots diamonds??? everything else is good.urock wrote:http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/VC64.asp
Looks nice. I guess it will be my first Kjaerhus plug. And everyone (myself included) thought that the VC-64 was from Voxengo!
the light effects falling on the diamond pot makes it difficult to see wtf is actually set on the pot.

but it is beautiful. to be sure, i mean, trend aside, whatever, it's a great bit of graphic work. i just can't get over how bad a decision was made on those pots. the ticks are almost identical to the lightsource.
a beautiful design poorly executed
sonar6 is really really tempting. are there upgrades for existing sonar 2XL owners i wonder?

well, in cakewalks defense doesn't cubase have quite a bit of marketshare? wouldn't emulating cubase in some ways (transport in your example) make it much less traumatizing for users to transition to sonar from cubase?bduffy wrote:You know, as a user of both, I can't help but think, looking at the previews, that there ain't much difference between SONAR and Cubase now!
They even look the same now. I mean, come on!:
I'm not criticizing, it's just interesting how close they're becoming. They were so different when I started this job...
EDIT: Yeah, jeez..."Audio Quantize"..."Track Layers"...it's come full circle now.
i am thankful for the similarity personally. say what you wish but commonality is a good thing. it makes it easier on the users.
this is proving to be an interesting time in evolving-host-land. live6, sonar6, cubase4, tracktion2.5, ext2 ...
when will a sonar6 demo be made available? will there be one? at this point i'm interested enough to try the demo.
the new mixer looks very nice. it looks like all the hosts are stealing ideas from each other? the pot style in the new sonar6 mixer is logic-esque, cubase is stealing design cues from ableton, etc. it seems the only real innovation going on anymore is being done by ableton and jorgen.
it's interesting times indeed.

$249 for Producer, $99 for Studio.grymmjack wrote: sonar6 is really really tempting. are there upgrades for existing sonar 2XL owners i wonder?
EDIT : and the demo version typically follows release by a month or so, AFAIR.
An idiot on Set Theory:

thanks rabbyt. i'm gonna give the demo a go. quite a bit of great time saving stuff seems to be included here. the price is fair.whyterabbyt wrote:$249 for Producer, $99 for Studio.grymmjack wrote: sonar6 is really really tempting. are there upgrades for existing sonar 2XL owners i wonder?

do you happen to know the difference between producer and studio? are the bundled plugs are the difference?

Hey, that's exactly how I feel; that was pretty much my intended sentiment. As a former SONAR user, I was just a little shocked to see how close it's getting, and how far it's come. Hell, SONAR's looking like a good choice for everyone now. (Except I found it less stable after beyond 2...)grymmjack wrote:well, in cakewalks defense doesn't cubase have quite a bit of marketshare? wouldn't emulating cubase in some ways (transport in your example) make it much less traumatizing for users to transition to sonar from cubase?bduffy wrote:You know, as a user of both, I can't help but think, looking at the previews, that there ain't much difference between SONAR and Cubase now!

i had the same experience myself after 2XL ... i think you misunderstood my post too, as we share the same opinion about it. i just elaborated on your thought with my own guess to CW's motivation to go this route...bduffy wrote:Hey, that's exactly how I feel; that was pretty much my intended sentiment. looking deeper in the new features, there are quite a buttload of workflow improvements that are certainly appreciated by live performing/live recording musicians. the take and track layers, that ACT stuff (which sounds like they just mapped common controls throughout the entire product on their own synths/effects and the bundled ones?) the VST organization, the synth racks..
though i have my suspicions about the new synth rack -- it seems great but also seems hastily executed/thrown together -- to compete perhaps with kore? i dunno. i understand the audio i/o for the synth rack is not going to be moved out of the mixer and into the rack, but i think it would be better if it was and racks had their own input and outputs (much like modular chainer rack(or rack-like) stuff like ext and reaktor and tracktion etc) ... the controller lanes underneath are VERY cool and i'm sure this is part of the ACT bit, and i'd also guess that they made it relatively short work to assign a new control to a new slot -- is there a universal midi learn in sonar6 like in most other hosts? i hope so
looking only at that shot though it looks like there is still only one monolithic rack, and that would suck imo
back to the main common concern you and i share since our v2 experience, i think it's safe to assume too that quite a bit has changed since our experience with v2. to be fair about it when i tried the v4 demo and v5 demo i got decent results with the audio engine.
i'm really intrigued and anxiously want to try the demo. i wonder if guitarcenter will have demos of sonar6 going at their shop?
is sonar6 officially shipping now?

It's officially shipping end of September, but the Cakewalk store online is taking advanced orders.grymmjack wrote: is sonar6 officially shipping now?
I would expect the online demo to be available from late October/early November, judging by previous years.

That's actually a pretty intriguing plugin - if it works as advertised, the abilitiy to "create automation envelopes based on the average levels of four frequency ranges." might allow sidechaining-like functionality on any parameter.headquest wrote: * The Analyst spectrum analyzer continues the Cakewalk tradition of producing at least one ugly plugin for each attractive one they produce. It will look damned fine nestling up to the old "Amp Sim" and "Cyclone".
I think the Kjaerhus plug looks beautiful - the inclusion of a $200 plugin and Radius, which is a $400 option for Logic users, in a $190 upgrade seals the deal for me! BTW, I thought the samples sounded great - I have a hard time getting even bass to sound good when I quantize it with Live. I'll be curious if it's usefull for more polyphonic material, especially guitars.

seems like sonar 6 is behind the times then. Thank you for adding to the list of apps that has it.bduffy wrote:OMG!
