My mum is actually in a surprisingly good head space, so my biggest concerns did not come true

I think that there's also a big component of relief in the situation. The months of "waiting" have turned into "certainty", and we're very reliefed that in the end he passed away quickly and without pain.

I'm going to stay here for the rest of the week till some other family members take over. Then, I suppose that next week will see me burying myself in work. Which is what my step dad would have wanted.

I know how it must have been like, since also my mother got suddenly very ill a month ago.

Makes one powerless that for some relatively common things science hasn't really found working cures.
