The free alternatives like Gsnap (quite okay) and Kerovee (extremely bad sounding) are not coming close to Melodyne. But, since you asked for a cheaper alternative:

There is the Computer Music Magazine Version of zplane's Vielklang 2, which you can get for 5 bucks.

zplane are one of the few developers that are technologically on par with Melodyne when it comes to time and pitch correction algorithms, so I would strongly suggest getting it.

Sure....there's a great alternative...

Old school style...

Only work with real singers who sing in tune !

Same with musicians....work with the good ones....

Leave the posers to strut their stuff in their bedrooms, whilst they gaze lovingly at themselves in the largest of mirrors
No auto tune...

It's just that it's so expensive. Even the Melodyne Essential costs just as much as a DAW :-(
I think I have three or four Melodyne Essential licences - came free with Sonar, with Tracktion, with Studio One, with Samplitude (I think?) - perhaps with anything else too?

IIrc I upgraded from the free Essential to V3 Editor for less than 150$, then later on once again for less than 150$ to V4 Studio - so not really that expensive if you can wait for deals...

I'm glad you told me !

Somebody offered me to buy Melodyne Essentials for 50 bounds. Now I know this software comes for free with a lot of products.

In 2010, the king was Melodyne. Now, it's Melodyne Studio 4...
