CS-80/Vangelis/Toto Sounds on Zebra ?

I know this is an old thread, but I just couldn't help myself. I don't have access to a pitch wheel or ribbon controller, so when I make patches in Z2, I often just fake it with the Random Glide LFO. It's not going to satisfy hardcore purists, but I think it will suffice, at least for me anyway

I realised this is an archaic thread, but i feel like it's personal for me
as i always make these kind of sounds in all of my soundsets
include the Padsheaven series for Zebra.
This is from some other synth demo but in the track i directly played the brass from Toto:
Toto africa brass from 5:32

BTW, I've tweaked that patch since I first posted. Has a lot more character nowaaron aardvark wrote:Sound Author,

Nice one Joseph! I like how you took the basic concept and then gave yourself permission to expand upon it with more modern techniques that weren't available to musicians back then. I mean, if they would've had 16 polyphonic unison voices at their disposal in those days, they probably would've used them! So why limit ourselves when we have the opportunity to do what the old timers wish they could have done then?hollo wrote:I realised this is an archaic thread, but i feel like it's personal for me

NP, Aaron. Of course, I think the focus of this thread was on brass stuff. I had a nice Africa Brass ala Toto preset saved to a Synth1 library that I accidentally deleted like an idiot. Perhaps I'll make one for Zebra 2 alsoaaron aardvark wrote:Sound Author,

Sound Author,
I agree the second patch is better. I'm currently using it (I tweaked it a bit though) for a synth lead combined with a non-u-he lead synth. The 2 together sound better than either one separately. Thank you again!

Yeah, I ended up decreasing the release for the amp envelope...and that reverb might need tweaking too. I still haven't mastered ZRev. I'm still a little confused about the diffusion controls. In any case, glad you got some use out of Blade Runner Bluesaaron aardvark wrote:Sound Author,

Sound Arthur,
Even if I think a synth patch is really good, there is at least a 50% chance I'm going to tweak it a bit for my personal preference, or to make it work better for a particular song I'm working on (just my opinion). If it is a sequencer patch, 90% chance I will tweak a few notes (unless it is playing just single notes or octaves) just so it is more original. Also, I'm really sensitive about high frequencies and most distortion effects with my headphones and dog ears.

Had just been working on patches for Africa. Was trying to get close enough to work live, but still sound enough like the real thing.
This is one take on the brass patch in context. It's a single Zebra 2.7 patch, slightly processed. A bit more dynamic than the real thing. For better or worse, so far.

It's true that a large part of why synth parts sound like they do is due to the player.. programming, articulation, feel, technique. Sometimes best we can do is come close enough for Government work.. as my dad used to say.
Plus, we tend to forget that many of the sounds we know are not raw out of the box, especially from the "old days". Many may not use a lot of outboard processing, but it is still in the context of a mix and what we hear is often how the part was made to fit in that mix. EQ, reverb, etc.

Thanks. I appreciate that.
Old world synth guy just decided to get back into it for fun, for now. I'm glad it still works. lol. (1967 isn't my b'day.. it's the year the Boston RedSox won the pennant when I was young.
)
Actually, it's the u-he stuff that got me interested in the tools again and make it pretty much as satisfying as it used to be 30 years ago. There is something almost organic about this stuff that really does make it feel right.
I used my D-50 to program and play that. But then realized that I am having the old D-50 velocity issues.. not sending full velocity; and need to clean the contacts.
Will clean up and adjust the patch to fit avg vel curve and, if anyone is interested, post it.

Do post the patch when you are satisfied please.
I agree completely about being inspired by U-He's inspiring software. Satisfying and fun is one word to describe it. Two words, actually.
