I think this direction will lead to either medical or military equipment. Beware the miltary route though, there's a lot of useless stuff at the surplus depots. Though if you have the technical skills you could modify.

I'm working on an EP of 4:33 remixes and I'm having a hard time getting the feel just right. You can get wobble bass all day long for most synths but sound designers seem to ignore the more subtle genres. Can anyone recommend a plugin that would be good for this?

i don't want to be the killjoy, but if you would know what was behind John Cage's conception of this (non-)piece of music, a realistic answer to your question could be given.

Cage had the idea to this piece after he visited an anechoic room. This was a catalysmic experience for him which - facing a "total" silence - made him realise, how many noises are going on all the time, without you realize them.

While most people think that 4'33 is about "silence", it's just the opposite:
The piece in fact is not the part of the non playing piano.
The "acoustic" piece - as intended by Cage -is all the noises going on, while the pianist is not playing.

So, a "mute-button" etc. is absolutely the wrong way to do a remix of 4:33.

The right way would be to go in "concert" with this piece and position the mikros in a way that they capture all the details that are going on in the ambience.
I'm sure, with that material, if you would normalize your recording, you could in fact do some amazing remixes:
Sound of the breathing of the people, coughing, noises produced by the people moving on their chairs, moving their feet; and all the noises that come from outside of the concert room.

(at the debut performance it was raining outside; so in that performance the noises of the rain played the main part of the piece).

Assuming you want to record the live performance thereof, something like
http://www.tweakbench.com/field might be the best bet. You could play with the different ambient noises to get different recordings of performances in different places.

I agree with the post above - muting defeats the point of the piece.

way too digital, if you ask me. someone mentioned vintage silence, and that's the route to take nowadays. I mean, adding a true! vintage analog non-sounding filter with a steampunk like permament mute button that cannot be unlocked gives a real feeling of what I'd call an artistic silence creation process. and for true variation I'd even go that far to chop the whole track it into slices of 3s (that's 91 independent slices, boy) and rearrange them in a completely different order!
