did soundcloud change something?

Afaik you can also upload Flac :P

We all know that bandwidth is expensive and so re-encoding to lower bitrates is IMO ok for the free account. But for premium users it's not a good business model. If artists must comment "sorry for the artifacts it's not my music it's Soundcloud" something is wrong (I saw similar comments).

Soundcloud now exists purely to attract listeners. They genuinely don't give a shit about how you feel about the streaming quality you're paying for as the listeners probably don't even notice listening on $5 headphones through their phone.

Soundcloud recently announced the introduction of audio advertising. See where I'm going?

They've got all your content, now they're going to start indirectly selling it.

I always produce in 48 Khz/24 Bit and upload those wavs to the Cloud, it gives better results to convert only once. Quality hasn't changed since the de-improved new cloud though.
Well, I'm not doubting you... in fact I'm pretty sure that is the case, but yeah, that's the f**kin stupidest thing I've ever heard! Why do I need to upload a 60MB Wav just for it to stream in Mp3 format?!... Why not upload a high quality Mp3 and it streams as a high quality Mp3?!... Why re-sample anything?!
I totally agree with you, just wanted to state what gives me the best results.

Just curious.
Youtube. It doesn't have any of SCs netowrking features geared toward music, but its sound encoding is surprisingly good. Beats Soundcloud at all video sizes other than 240p. The 360p and 480p encodes will give you 128 AAC sound while 720p and above will give you 192 AAC. All beat the pants off Soundcloud's 128 MP3. Just make sure you upload your video with an uncompressed audio container for maximum quality (the same way you'd upload wav to SC) and you're away.

I know I keep going on about it, but a site dedicated to streaming audio offering dire audio quality when compared to a site dedicated to streaming video is a joke.

Here we go ;)

It's free, quality is 1:1 how it's uploaded. The player supports Facebook so it will be directly embedded like the soundcloud player... they providing different artists, artists pages, a offical page (this page shown above) and stuff.
It's not perfect but a good alternative for SC.

Don't forget that a 16-bit/44.1 WAV file is approx 10 times the size of a 128kbps mp3. If they enable streaming of WAV files, that would really load up their internet connections. Assuming that SC could sustain that load, there are many internet users who would not be able to reach the required 1.33333Mbit/sec sustained speed required to play a WAV file. And remember, these client connections are not just streaming data, there is all sorts of network chatter going on in parallel. Until 2 weeks ago, my home connection was 1.5Mbit/sec. All those mobile devices would barf.

Thanks OzWozEre, cron & 4damind :)
But what about those of you who are able to have 24bit files (WAV?) etc.?
From my POV (that is, outside), it does not seem that there's a homogeneous Soundcloud experience.

Very easy is to use and has lot of _very_ interesting options: automatic upload a song to Youtube (!) they make a video in the background with HQ and and using the cover as a still image... Automatic uploading to Soundcloud (!)... different workspaces, using of playlists... every song/playlist can have a own promo page where you only see the player with this song/playlist. Embedding in Facebook works the same like with Soundcloud: putting the link as comment will embed the player.

The missing features:
- replacing a song (this works with Soundcloud with the premium account)

Every song can be sold (there is a option to set a paypal e-mail, the value and stuff.. very easy! If you make more then $30 they ask for $5 per month. This is their business model if you sell songs for more then $30.

I ask them about the replacing of files feature and got quickly a answer. So there is a service ;)
Anyway, it's free so you can test it for yourself and see if it works for you.

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but... wow... just uploaded a new WIP to my SoundCloud account and noticed that one of my previous uploads sounds horrible. It used to be fine. They must be re-encoding to lower quality lately. It's obscene. Once a company becomes popular and starts making money, they reduce the quality of the product and change how it looks so that it's not what it was when it attracted its initial success. Retards.

No, I really don't think it does and I have a paid account.

Problem seem in currently too. I want upload surround DTS Neo 6 tracks(surround is compressed to 2 channels and later expand to correct speakers. this sound really worse, because have more data.

Maybe somebody know if there is other more popular platform, as offical.fm here, that work better with surround mix.
I test bandcamp same worse quality and on bandcamp music level is around 6 db lower. soundcloud uploads play with same level. but have lots of mp3 artefarct

I create with "V.I Stereo to 5.1 Converter VST Plugin Suite" and i use a stereo send channel with the slsr plugin to position at rear speaker, reverb ambience and pad sounds. It boost the sound alot, and need no real 5.1 DAW. I wish more songs are produce this way, because of the rear speaker with pad and reverb sound really amazing. But need to sound ok at least 192 kbit mp3. 128kbit is worse.
