is it just me or has anyone else noticed this:
my tracks on soundcloud dont sound as good as they used to. when streaming from soundcloud my tracks used to sound just like theyre supposed to. i dont listen to my own tracks on soundcloud often so i cant say when it happened, but now my tracks all sound thin...as though they turned the bass down in an eq setting or something.
i dont think im crazy (well not in this instance anyway) as when i play them from my computer they sound just like they always did, and like i said...the 2 used to sound the same. i havent changed anything on my system.
anyone?
did soundcloud change something?

I noticed this too. My track Distortion Emporium sounds quite cheap on soundcloud while the wav it amazingly deep. It wasn't the case before the change of interface.

Not sure if i'm imagining a change, but there seems to be a significant drop in volume between a rendered mp3 and a Soundcloud stream now.

Are you using the new SoundCloud interface or the old one? There is an option in the new interface to use an HTML5 player. I'm still using the old interface and there has always been a difference between the quality of streamed tracks and the original uploaded file. I haven't knowingly tried the HTML5 player yet. I think the default is to use the original player, regardless of interface.

I didn't know that. Will have a poke around on the Soundcloud interface. Youtube recently rolled out their HTML5 beta which I was automatically enrolled in, and it made everything sound like shit as HTML5 audio (or somesuch) is only currently supported on Chrome at the moment. Soundcloud's quality is already dire as it is. 128kbps MP3. Even Youtube offers significantly better sound quality (at all video sizes other than 240p). It's a pretty shocking state of affairs for a service dedicated to streaming audio. I'd be amazed if they've done something to make it sound even worse.

I'm fully aware of how shite the old streaming was, but since I read this thread I think I notice that even that has got worse. Might be just because I'm listening carefully though lol.

One thing I do notice is that the high frequencies in some of my tracks are a swishy mess on Soundcloud, especially drums that feature a lot of cymbal work. It's almost as if I have to render a regular version and a Soundcloud version. Frustrating.

god, I despise them, what a useless bunch of coders. Please do not link songs about women being raped, to songs about men who like to do the raping. It is kind of insensitive. I think someone should re-write their algorithms. Don't you?

There are plenty of other sites to foist your music on the listening-while-texting public, just not as well-known and not as huge of a following -- at least not yet.
You know, SoundCLICK sometimes refuses to let you QUIT their site. They are some very insecure, nasty people. I think that site is my personal choice for most slimy. It took an attorney to clear my data and tunes when I decided I wanted out. One of my best buddy's publisher had to threaten to get him out.
Now, I haven't posted to SoundCloud in about 6 months, and last I did I'm not sure I even waited around to audition results. It used to be, you had the option of having your stuff in 320kps. It was AOK with them. But the descriptions everyone just posted here about how the tunes sound now is textbook 128 or at best 192kps -- bass all missing and weak, upper highs swirly and weird.
They are huge now. Quality music takes up real space like high-qual photos. Maybe they are getting tight for server space. I use all Linux for internet work, so can't cope with HTML5. Everybody knows that is just for cool visual experience and not really intended to enhance music. And, yes, only Chrome right now I think.
My real theory re SoundCloud at maybe as low as 128 is that they are only concerned with the youth and their smart phones or players. On those $10-20 iPod knockoffs the sound is crud anyways. And the kiddies ears are in a constant state of fatigue -- they assume they couldn't tell the diff anyway. Let's see, iTunes has stolen all our money and these certain other sites have stolen any commercial value by destroying the fidelity of anything we might upload. What's an honest bloke of a musician to do? I remember better times, far better times. I fixed my situation up almost 10 years ago with a pension. Didn't blow all my money each night like all my band mates always did. I was considered the cheap one. They thought it was a party 24/7 and would last forever. I thought it was a job. I could have got out of this weird and getting weirder each day music business that 10 years back but tried it sort of. Got sick of ocean fishing and being in the sun all the time. Beach sand gets in everything, even guitar cases that have never got within 5 miles of the beach. Ocean fish all have really really sharp teeth like stinking piranhas. Got sick of that fast. I hate MP3's in the first place, no matter the quality. Still in the business, though, and will probably stay. Still record most days even, or at least record others. Mentoring a few young snots who have those dreadful entitlement attitudes, fed all their lives by idiot teachers filling them with false notions of self-esteem, self-fulfillment, self-everything. I'm going to unleash them and then another batch after on the world. My revenge. I stay in music to poke fun at all the narcissists and soon-to-be American Idols. Fun to be a complete pest when you don't owe anyone anything and they have no way to control you anymore. I can tell bar owners they are a special species of slug now if I want when they pull crap, 'cause I don't need the return gig. The joke is on them. We even steal their liquor at load out if they have been rude.
Sorry . . . I'm rambling. I wish my son had not gone into music too. I warned him. The girl singing at today's session actually hurt my ears. I think I've got blood in one. Whining about the industry or what was one and very dodgy music websites is somehow therapeutic. All better now.

I've never been happy with the sound of my stuff on SoundCloud, and I haven't posted much because of it.
But does anyone know if the sound quality improves with a paid account as opposed to the free one? Pandora does (and other sites do) this, though I haven't seen where SoundCloud mentions anything like it.

Soundcloud isn't an underground little site anymore.
It's been financially backed to tune of $millions and it's popularity and stature have now reached "mainstream" status.
I heard they (we're forced to) integrate new anti-copyright measures/algos recently to play nice with the major content providers.
I would bet lowering the quailty of their audio would also be part of this "deal".
