The chorus sound of the string machines did not only depend on the BBD effect on the sound but also on the scheme of the chorus construction. Different manufacturers had different approaches (2 LFOs > 2 BBDs ; 1 LFO > 3 stage waveform shift > 2 BBDs etc :wink: )

one of the definitions of bucket brigade (harmony central iirc) is an "improperly" coded digital delay line.. i had an old rack fx implemented in this manner (which is different from the analog delay i have, which generally behaves like a "properly" coded delay line).


conventional digital delay has a fixed buffer length, the read position chases the write position by the delay length, buffer length is the max. delay time.

some old digital delays changed the length of the buffer instead.. so if you had 1 sec. in memory and shortened to 500ms, when you lengthen the delay to 1 sec. again, the extra 500 ms. will be whatever was in the memory before it was shortened... acting ~like an audio "capture and hold"

these types of delays could also be coded where the old memory was wiped before increasing delay length.. they still overtly "glitch" when delay time is changed.

easy to code but only really fun/worthwhile in a hands on world.

Thank you fr your post Xoxos. I understand the coding concept you're talking about here, but unless I'm wrong, this is very different from the software modelling of a hardware bucket-brigade device, which has nothing improper about it (quite the contrary :D).
I'm not much of a coder myself, but I suspect you're refering to applying the bucket-brigade structure to make a digital delay (therefore producing glitches due to playing back memory content, be it audio signal or anything else). Obviously there's nothing in "memory" _but_ the audio signal in vintage the hardware world, so no question of glitch anyway.

In any case, I'm after a particular sound (ie. the string machines of old), and even more specifically the effect section greatly (but not totally) responsible for that kind of sound. I am not interested the least bit (pun intended) in digital glitches, or Glitch (that's supposed to be a techno subgenre or sth nowadays, right?). So I'm looking for any good VSTs that reproduce faithfully (without the original limitations and non-musical side-effects though) the behaviour of BB choruses and delays, especially onboard choruses of the various stringmachines in the mid-late 70's.
