[It wouldn't have been that hard to add polyphony. The fact that it doesn't shouldn't need someone to spell out the obvious though. Monark is about making a statement about the authenticity of what's emulated, and limiting the features is all part of making that statement

until you look at the back panel and see the concessions given to improvements

sounds great, though i can't think why i would ever choose to buy this over diva

i already have komplete 8. for $150 i can upgrade to k9 and get this, battery 4, the solid plugins, plus a couple of other sound libraries. or i can get just diva for $180.

i've pre-ordered k9.

clearly i was talking about a one-off purchase, not considering bundled upgrade paths

Only took 6 posts for someone to bring up Diva!

so i shouldn't say it because it's a little overdone...there's a reason that diva gets mentioned a lot in this kind of thread, because they a) were the 1st to really take emulation to the next level b) have, by many accounts, set a high benchmark by which other 'accurate' emulations might be judged

they are also both emulating a bygone synth era, doing some basic bread 'n' butter stuff very well

for me, imo (as it's the only way i can post it), i would rather take diva with extra emulated modules, polyphony, much more flexibility and an upcoming arpeggiator

some people would say diva is a little limited in the scope of the synthesis and sounds you might be able to design, so where does that leave monark ??

like i said, it sounds great to my ears, and it possibly spells great things for reaktor which is a piece of software i really dig, but it just doesn't excite me....

The fact that Diva's minimoog emulation features sync, waveform modulation, multiple FM destinations, LFO's, modulation transformers/filters, and you can switch in a multimode filter and other parts... Add that to the best minimoog emulation the internet has ever heard and it becomes obvious why it's mentioned in any synth* that threatens to be analogue sounding and "the only synth you need"

I feel I should also point out that sync really is a big deal for me, because not only can it make the obvious PEOWW leads, it also massively expands the amount of static waveforms you can create, from pseudo intervals all the way to dissonant spectra. A lot of my favourite synth sounds use sync and pitch modulation in very subtle ways.

Something about the presenter subtly hints 'douche'..

I thought this comment was a bit over the top until I heard the presenter say "Gooey" in reference to the Monark GUI.

Or maybe I'm the douche. Do people really call it "Gooey?"

I think it's because he was more like a shopping channel presenter...
Laughing at preset names and being a bit... Childish.
It seemed to me that they just got their promo copy that morning and had a half an hour glance at it before making the vid,, maybe they wanted to be first...
Just didn't seem professional.

Should get Dan Warrell (fabfilter vids) on the case, that what a plug info vid should be like.
I can see "how big the knobs are" but would like to hear more or the filters etc.

Too bad it's much more talking than sound examples in this video.
What I heard from it does sound very good though.

Is the mono-only 'feature' a way to cash in on a poly synth later on, or does the CPU consumption play a role in this design choice? Time will tell ...

Osc sync just sounds so good for certain sounds...

I guess that if a perfect hardware analog Minimoog clone were released today, it would not do so well... People expect such features as Osc Sync, Pulse Width Modulation, Velocity and Ring Modulation.

And NI invites ridicule for offering a synth with none of those things (and monophonic too) and saying it is the one synth you need... One really has to restrain oneself in the face of that claim

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that Minimoogs are monophonic and have no velocity sensitivity. I used to have a monophonic Roland with only one oscillator, and I played it more than I played my Oberheim four-voice, because it was a great lead instrument. Those limitations are actually not limitations when you add volume pedals and use it for what it's good for. When I think back to all my favorite synth solos going back to the early seventies, the majority were played on a mini.

True, stock minis had no sync, but a LOT of famous players added it, so if I were NI it'd be the one thing I would have added, especially since it's so key to so many great, yet basic analog sounds. And yet they did add env retrigger and last note legato...
