M8.2.12 is available in http://www.mutools.com/mulab/beta/
Windows: Replace the current MuLab.exe and MuLab.ID by the new versions.
MacOS: Replace the current MuLab.app by the new version.
- Support for an alternative user folder: Until now the user folder was fixed to the "User" sub-folder in the application folder. Now this can be overwritten by a special text file. Details on http://www.mutools.com/info/M8/docs/com ... ences.html
- When on startup the user folder doesn't exist or is not writable then the system app data folder is used. Also see the same doc page for details.
- Log files are now saved in the {UserFolder}/LogFiles
- Other small improvements.
Windows: Replace the current MuLab.exe and MuLab.ID by the new versions.
MacOS: Replace the current MuLab.app by the new version.

Is MuLab going to remain portable? It's one of the best things about it imho!

Does this replace <UserLibraryFolder>/some/path/here</UserLibraryFolder> in User/Settings/AppPreferences.Xml ?

You mean the "User Library Folder" in the preferences. (editable from within the GUI)
No it does not replace that preference. That preference is about the library folder that contains your projects, presets, etc. By default it's the "Library" sub-folder inside the User Folder.
So to summarize: A typical MuLab/MUX Plugin user folder has these sub-folders:
+ Audio
+ Library
+ LogFiles
+ Settings
The original "User Library Folder" preference is about defining another location for the library. This preference continues to exist. The new option is about the user folder itself.
Does this clarify it all?
To avoid confusion: The average user won't have to deal with all this. It's just about some extra options for the advanced user.

OK, so if this new option were set, then User/Settings/AppPreferences.Xml itself would move, but its contents would thence mean the same as the currently do? (The only thing I have in User is User/Settings, but there's quite a lot there and I'd happily move it somewhere it can be more easily backed up with my user data. Oh, and it sticks Audio/Recordings there - I thought that was elsewhere, too...)

When you change your user folder, nothing is automatically copied nor moved, only the path changes. So if you change the path to the user folder and also want to copy/move previous user settings etc to it, you have to do that yourself. Advantage is that you have perfect control, no sudden (maybe even unwanted) automated copying/moving.
Yes indeed there also can be an "Audio" sub-folder in the user folder. (i've updated my previous post)

Sorry bout that, will fix that asap.
It's because the User/MuProject/AutoSaved folder doesn't exist yet.
Until M8.2.16 is available, if you would need access to your MuLab audio setup, create a AutoSaved folder in your User/MuProject folder.
Thx for reporting this, you can remove the video.

M8.2.16 is available in http://www.mutools.com/mulab/beta/
Windows: Replace the current MuLab.exe and MuLab.ID by the new versions.
MacOS: Replace the current MuLab.app by the new version.
- Fixed a bug wrt auto-save that prevnted opening MuLab's audio setup panel.
Also, when audio setup would ever not be able to auto-save the open projects (should not happen, but computers are complex beasts), you will still get the option, via a popup alert, to open MuLab's audio setup. - MUX Front panels: When selecting another Oscillator Layer preset from a front panel, that Oscillator Layer button changed position. Fixed.
- Finetuned the filler background color for VST plug editors that are smaller than the minimum VST editor size.
Windows: Replace the current MuLab.exe and MuLab.ID by the new versions.
MacOS: Replace the current MuLab.app by the new version.
