i have to agree with the sentiment that most developers update their software too often.
I mean, Jesus. It seems like Cubase SX just came out when SX2 was announced. Now, as I'm finally starting to get deep into SX2, here comes SX3. wtf?
Don't get me wrong, the new features sound great. but, at some point, you have to ask yourself if what you already have will ever be enough. i'm tired of getting gouged in the pocket-book and tired of feeling like i'm behind the curve if i don't get every single update.

I don't think its the switch, i think he's just past his prime thats all.Aff wrote:Well i think Liam Howletts switch to Reason 'only' has had a detrimental effect on his music.
Read into that what you will
There was frankly little chance he would improve on some of the stuff on "jilted generation", and he rarely has since.
I still think "girls" is a great track, nice and filthy

And most of the time, the updates don't work anyway! Although Live 4.0 is pretty darn smooth for a first effort...

People like/dislike Reason for their own personal reasons, I won't go into that. But from a software engineering point of view I have to say that Reason is the single most rock solid stable music software I've ever come across. It never ever crashes, and it does exactly what the manual says it does. If only Cubase were like that ... oh well.
I'd rather wait a bit longer for Reason 3 than to have a product that crashes randomly, where documented functions don't work, etc etc.

When I was younger I used to be in doubt. These days I'm not so sure.

don't worry about that. as a matter of fact, sx2 should have been sx 1.5 or something, since it was not big step up from sx1.06. and sx3 is not as spectacular as its version number says. they still haven't made insert fx manipulation, nor sidechain in two major releases. somehow i came up with a theory that steinberg releases a major release every now and then just to come to the same number as logic or protools. logic is version 7 so it must be a lot better than cubase sx 3, right?altar boy bomb squad wrote:i have to agree with the sentiment that most developers update their software too often.

Reason has nothing to do whether that album is musical or not. That's pretty short sighted to think that Reason could make an electronic album sound totally crappy.quincy wrote:I don't think its the switch, i think he's just past his prime thats all.Aff wrote:Well i think Liam Howletts switch to Reason 'only' has had a detrimental effect on his music.

Would not the artist programming the tunes have anything to do with it? I mean, give me a piece of charcoal and some paper, and I'll give you a stick figure. But give those same tools to a great artist, and they can do things that I would never have thought of...with just charcoal!
Its not the tools, its the artist. Arguably, Liam's been "going downhill" for some time now, so I don't see how Reason plays into it. I happen to like the new album, so to each his own.

HI
What all the 'old Farts' around here don't realise is - in the hand's of the young (talented and motivated) anything is possible - I gave my son (21) Reason and a pile of Refills, he had practically never used it before - he didn't even have the manual because I still have it, to cut a long story short a week after he moved into his new home with his new PC I popped over and he played me a 'Garage' and a 'drum & Bass' tune (s), now I write some pretty good stuff but his duo knocked my socks off, I know for sure he will get his SECOND commercial release with one or the other of these tunes - but what comes to my mind is WTF is he capable of doing a year down the line once he's mastered Reason?
Sorry for the following, its directed at the spoilers!
Stop F.....G moaning and start (if your capable) making music
.
Flipper.

Well done for somehow reading the exact opposite of what my post meant! I'm saying that i think liam has had his best time, and it isn't now. Its got nothing to do with Reason, and thats was my point!
