there was one in the developers contest a few years back, pretty sure it was by ugo.

It's a bit hidden. Go to the preset browser and click on the little arrow next to the search field.synaesthesia wrote: Sun May 30, 2021 7:25 pmDoes it now? I've not noticed that. Is it new-ish? I may not have a very recent version.jules99 wrote: Sun May 30, 2021 12:59 pm Serum has had the "Hybridize" feature which es essentially a scaled down version of Absynth's mutate.

LOL, that is...BUT if I were a talented designer and had a synthesizer that generated 100 or at least 50 'interesting' and full functional presets, I would leave the random button on an automatic macro loop and spend my free time producing all the music piled up on my hard drive.e-crooner wrote: Mon May 31, 2021 4:12 pm Such synths are perfect for third-party sound designers that have no talent. TBH, my idea of randomization is as an adventure, an open door to experimentation, not an excuse for lack of creativity.
Plus, with the fickle random button I can usually have tons of fun!
One feature I really appreciate is the selective randomization, which allows you to choice the parameters that will be affected. But there are notorious exceptions.
For example, with my favorites in that randomness matter, WARLOCK (TONE2) despite there not provide selective parameters for randomization, gives amazing results,
It seems that its random function is based on a very intelligent programming engine that does not allow vague or useless results, closely followed by Icarus2.
Another fav Rob Papen Predator2 random 'Variations' in the 'Easy Mode' make very good results, also for arpeggios (notes) and Waves Tables adding different values to the partials. random and MIDI parameters.
The same for GO2 and B.I.T. and almost all plugins in eXplorer 6 have randomization "bonus". Great!
AIR MT LOOM II , although a bit unpredictable at times, it yields unexpectedly interesting results. Quite suitable for sci fi environments, cinematic atmospheres, although sometimes a little bit less musical.
Although it is more a mutation of a groove machine with an impressive drum sound synthesizer, Drumcomputer (SugarBytes) deserves an honorable mention for the amazing implementation of the random concept.
DC doesn't let you isolate specific parameters like oscillators, modulation, effects but instead it allows to apply randomization to one, any or all of the 8 drum synth engines at the same time, making new kits at every click.
It also features an impressive random for the sequence section and each of the parameters such as pitch, probability, volume and repetition/stutter (roll), beat offset, decreasing (decay).
For even more selectivity it has specific random types to create kick, snares, claps, hi hats, percussion, Cymbal and Synth.
DrumComputer with its essential random inner soul, along with Rob Papen's Punch 2, are my favorites when I came to synthesize and create new drum sounds.

I am with you on selective randomization.
Nice to be able to go back a few steps.
Would be great have a choice for true random, Musical random or AI random.
Randomization is much faster than me playing with the parameters.
Yes I tweak once I find an interesting setting.
I am one to take advantage of every tool available to make music.
I assemble my music PC but as opposed to Real computer musicians I cheat and buy the processor and RAM and drive instead of making my own.

I'll add a few drum synths
Sonic Charge's Microtonic
Inear Display's Ephemere
Although not a synth, also check out the "random button DIY kit" for Sonic Charge's Permut8 & Echobode

I reckon people might notice if you only ever released stuff for synths with randomise options!e-crooner wrote: Mon May 31, 2021 4:12 pm Such synths are perfect for third-party sound designers that have no talent. Also, depending how good the randomisation is (and I guess that's something I'll find out on my project!), you might get so many unsuable sounds it might even take longer to make them! Haha.

I'd agree with that. I think most people know roughly what they're planning to make when they start a track.Jazzguitar wrote: Mon May 31, 2021 11:57 pm

Randomised patches are probably only useful when you've come to a complete brick wall and need a moment's inspiration. Or, if you want to just inject something completely unexpected into a track... either for fun or to solve a problem.
I'm not sure even the best randomiser would be something you'd use that often. You'd be there forever!
Mind you, I guess I'll find all that out when I try them out.

Discovery / Discovery Pro got a randomize function for individual layer, morphing and full program.

I would like to also see a preset morpher where two presets are merged using true random or intelligent/musical manipulation. In the pervious century I had a program that did this which I found useful.

The Arturia Polybrute has that. Does look like a fun feature.Kalamata Kid wrote: Thu Jun 03, 2021 4:46 pm I would like to also see a preset morpher where two presets are merged using true random or intelligent/musical manipulation. Looking for synths that have randomisation built in.
Intrigued by how that Zebra2 patch might work though! Seems an extraordinary idea.
