Is 5800x really similarly priced? 400$ chip only vs 700$ mini
Depend which benchmark. In Cinebench 23 single core the Ryzen is a little bit better. In Geekbench the m1 is a little better. So overall about equal. Then the Ryzen destroy the m1 in multi-core performance.

A B550 motherboard + good air cooler + 16 GB RAM + PCIE Gen3 SSD, case, PSU is about the same price (keep old GPU). And you'll have better expansion options, ports and much cheaper to change a part if it fail than the "all-in-one everything glue and soldered we don't allow repair" Mac Mini.

I'm looking forward to the M1 Mac Mini... from various reports there is basically no fan noise.
My PC is in a different room so I have no noise, dead silent. Of course it's not practical for everybody. My consoles and UHD player is also in a different room than my TV, so I can play or watch a movie with zero ambient noise.

But I agree PC can be noisy and this is bad. Noise is the reason I move mine to another room. A Mac Mini in this case can be an excellent choice.

Well.

After waiting to see what the new M1 Pro/Max were all about, I decided that I was a cheap ass and ended up buying a used M1 Air (base model 8GB/256GB) for £675.

Amzingly, I can run 13 instances of Repro 5 in HQ mode, all playing a 5 note chord in HQ/MC mode. 128 sample buffer, Core Audio.

I really just wanted it for the ability to do some sound design away from the desk with the possibility of doing some small demo project, but it seems I can do way more than small demo projects with this thing. It's definitely more powerful that my last MBP, which was a 2014 quad core i7.

Oh yeah. The M1 13” had been my main ride for the past year

I received my new 16" M1 Pro MBP yesterday and have been busy installing stuff. No tests done, but I was playing around with Bitwig and Bazille and Hive last night for about 45 minutes and it was barely warm to the touch and not a hint of fan noise. My previous one would have been almost too hot to touch and the fans would have been whirring within 5 minutes! For me a very pleasing result.

14” is supposedly running hotter. Which i guess is only logical.

Which config did you get

Same here. The only time it got warm underneath was when I was syncing dropbox (weirdly), but under normal 'load' you wouldn't even know it was switched on.

It's like Apple was playing one of those jokes for the last 5-10 years, then went 'haaaahhhhh not reeeeeally'.

16" with the M1 Pro processor, 32GB, 2TB drive...

My priority is low heat and minimal fan noise so I went for the M1 Pro rather than Max... guessing it might be a bit cooler (which is still an unknown). Plus, the M1 Pro is plenty good for my needs.

Oh, I like the new keyboard better and the screen is really nice!

Nice! I'm still on the fence whether to get it or just keep the 13" M1 for a while longer

A pal I do a lot of work with bought the 16" M1 Pro and we've been comparing results. His seems to be 'approximately' double the power of mine which is pretty much what Apple claim.

Not enough for me to need to upgrade in the foreseeable, but....

The M1 Pro MBP does have faster charging and a high quality, high impedance headphone output. I also REALLY liked the magsafe charger on my much older MBP, so there are actual reasons to want to upgrade now.

That I would guess could be because of SSD activity.

I love Mag-Safe! It saved my previous laptop quite a few times when working in cafes! You know, back before Covid when people used to go work in cafes :ud:

I'm happy to have it back again...
