There's limited returns from more cores, as more communication is needed to schedule all the splitting and rejoining of processes.

You should get a bit more grunt out of the i9. But I was putting CPUs into CPU benchmark and, to me, it just didn't seem necessary for the past extra cost.

Yeah I see what you mean. I'm just afraid I won't have enough power, it's a shame there's no way to test your daily sessions on a few laptops and then decide, maybe I'll rent the i7 or the i9 not the hx and then see if it's enough

It depends ALSO on the DAW, you should ask your DAW's support what architecture is better for its performance.

I just ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad 16 with this to use with Gig Performer:
12th Generation Intel® Core™ i9-12900HX Processor

I am a bit concerned because the base frequency per core is only 2.3 (I have also read 2.4). This is pretty low (especially for their top-of-the-line chip). (With Turbo boost, the max is 5.0). (Gig Performer uses only a single core/thread).

My understanding is this is basically the case with all the new intel top of the line chips.

I have read that (at least up to now) Turbo does not work to well in music production/performance. It introduces artifacts.

Any thoughts on this?

Has the new Turbo Max 3.0 fixed this issue so it plays well in production performance?

If not, maybe it will become a matter of course to overclock when used for music production/performance?

Congratulations, that's a nice rig.

I'm probably speaking out of my butt, but I think you can disable the "efficiency" cores in the bios, and default the i9 to only use the performance cores. I know it's a thing with my 12700K, but I don't know if it's different on your chip.

I would give it a full blown run through before considering OCing it though, it will probably do just fine.

Got me wondering now if I want to build a "mobile" mini-ITX rig around something like the 12600.

Thx, I suspect you are right, the CPU will likely be fine for my purposes.

The big draw for me is the amount of ram (64 GB, upgradeable to 128 GB in the future).

If you/we are right, it should allow me to use Gig Performer the way I prefer to use it for a long time.
