Based on parts of the comments it seems that maybe I haven't made my end goal clear enough. With trying to keep it simple: Make two songs on the Yamaha, each with 5 tracks from varying instruments. Take both of those tracks and 'stack them', so that each of the 10 instsruments plays its part in the song. After I got started and seeing some of the things the DAW will do, it got me to thinking being able to take advantage of those sounded good. But the hiccup seems to be getting it back to the Yamaha in a form that will use the same instruments, and play correctly.
@Watchful...I'll have to give some focus time to the options list you listed to understand each path, and figure out which may work for me. I think in the end my biggest hurdle is having the updated midi provide the right voices from the Yamaha.
I had also posted a question about combining two songs like this on a Yamaha forum. I got this reply:
You need a midi merge box; its function is to keep the channel information separated. From Google: "..MIDI Merge boxes combine the data from a number of MIDI sources into a single output.."
From Sweetwater: ".. a device that merges MIDI data from two or more sources. MIDI mergers are more than just electrical combiners (or “Y” cables); they must carefully keep the MIDI bytes of data in tact, which means they somewhat intelligently look at the information passing to ensure they don’t disrupt the continuity.
