currently playing regular open chords all the way down there, sounds like a folk gig in hell... :)

I don't have a bass (never got on with the spacing, dodgy wrist) so it's fun for me just to play bass stuff down there without having to think too much. I did once have a short scale bass (30" too I think) with thicker strings but that was definitely a lot flabbier than this sub-zero vi which is remarkably buzz-free.
Liker a bass as you say here, but also chords stuff from the middle of the neck up sounds completely different to a normal guitar (obviously given the thickness of the strings!) I tend to do quite a lot of stuff where it sits between bass and guitar in it's own 'space', or indeed use it instead of a guitar for stuff like this;

Sure, but as long as you don't go below the 5th fret, you can set it up as a baritone instead and gain a lot of both flexibility and playability that way. A baritone is doing exactly that: sitting right between bass and guitar - an E-to-E six-string bass however is a lot more on the bassy side of things.

And if you really need to play chords that low, four strings are plenty to drown everything else. :hihi:

But as a tradeoff you lose out on that unique sound of having the ultra thick strings, which is why I like the bass VI, plus you can go from playing it as a bass to playing chords higher up, in the same song!

Yeah, I guess it's a mere matter of taste after all...

Why can't there be a 12 string Bass VI, with the second set of strings a guitar set. Can't see as it would be any problem with tension.. :hihi:
Hamer did that weird one with four sets of three strings donkey's years ago. Dunno why...

It was to replace the rhythm guitarist.
