So that means that choking should be implemented in the audio signal world, not in the MIDI signal world?! And if a sound with a long release time should be cut off upon choke then which release time should be used then?Bax9 wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 11:44 am This does not exclude that I can set a long release on the open hi-hat, the moment a choke occurs the sound must cut off.

I think my idea of connecting the decay and release parameters of the open hat sampler takes care of that, lets remember, in the midst of a track who is going to tell the difference.

MPC's can be set up however, I just used those as an example, but any MIDI pad controller will trigger notes this way. MPC probably wasnt a good example due to how complex they can be! You can literally do just about anything to drums in them!!! Well, maybe not everything, but you get what I'm saying.
I don't mind if it gets included or not, to be honest, but I see the usefulness of choke groups and wouldn't mind it myself. But the hardware I have all has chokes built in: SP-404mk2, MPC Live 3, MC-909, Arturia Beatstep Pro, So really doesnt matter to me, but It likely depends on others set ups and how they use it.

There are many ways of choking a sound in e-drums (not just sequencer pads, I'm talking full e-kits). Normally, the note off is sent but the intent, as mentioned, is that it's totally ignored. The sample is triggered by the note on.
Note lifetime, then, is governed by MIDI still, not audio. An e-kit is a MIDI instrument triggering samples. It uses the MIDI for control. It has the concept of mute groups for choking. I can put pressure on a cymbal (polyphonic aftertouch) to mute it, for example. Or I can play a closed hi-hat after an open hi-hat to mute the open hi-hat. Or pedal hi-hat. Or splash hi-hat (damn Roland for not emitting that (reliably)). Or even grab the open hi-hat to mute it (again, polyphonic aftertouch for that).
So no, it's not controlled in the audio world at all. For the hi-hat, it's directly off the Note On events (but dependent upon the "current value" of (i.e. most recently seen) pedal position).

doesn't matter if they are gated ornot:MuTools wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 12:04 pm If MIDI drum pads are gated, i.e. they send note on on pad down and note off on pad up, then i don't see the real need for a choke feature on DAW side. To avoid confusion: I'm just brainstorming and trying to understand the effective need / benefit.
i can play a CH pattern and on top of that a OH now and then
the OH need to be cut out/off when i assign a polyphony of 1 or assign them the same choke/mute group
an interesting extra would be to play a long sample/loop and now and then cut pieces/chun ks out of it with another note, but the sample/loop would keep playing (in the background) - similar as muting a ch on a console
double points for making this work with a sample/loop while the sample doesn't continue playing, but stops, and then on next note/(un)mute continue where we left off

Use 2 parallel sample players (eg. MuSampla) and connect them to an Audio Balancer.
Now use the balance parameter to select one or the other sampler.
You could also control the balance parameter using a note event so that when the control note is down sample A is playing, when control note is down sample B is playing.
Use MUX Modular.
