Exporting NO compressed files is so 1700's.

I'd like export directly to OGG. I can do without MP3, mind you.

time for my usual (since sascha frank hasnt turned up to mention it) point that makes .mp3 next to useless for even collaboration ...

... .mp3 encoding ADDS a little bit of silence to the start of your audio so if you work directly with that .mp3 EVERYTHING goes to cock with your timing ... if you convert those .mp3s to .wav you have to fart about either editing the silence out or shifting the audio in your sequencer to make it fit ...

... WHAT A FUKCING PAIN IN THE ARSE ...

... neither .ogg nor .flac add this silence (in fact AFAIK no other compression method does)

Doesn't Ableton support using mp3's directly imported into tracks now? That could be a problem if you're playing live. Does it automatically trim off the silence then?

thats a VERY good question ...

and the answer is a big fat NO ...

original drumloop .wav ...

converted to .mp3 using LAME codec ...

I imagine it would be a serious pain to fix as it happens. MP3 is MP3. It has trade offs and problems that the user needs to balance against portability. Ogg *is* a better fornat, but even there you will have have functional limitations as a result of using ogg files that wav does not exhibit.

I don't really see that as ableton's problem. Especially when in most places >1MBps Internet access can be had for less that the price of Live per year, moving large files around is really not going to be a problem in the near future.
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!

true (and i said as much over on the live forum when i posted the issue) ... but a less technically aware live user not aware of this .mp3 issue might well end up blaming ableton for their timing problems ...

... at the very least they ought to inform / remind people of this 'limitation' of .mp3 in their manuals ???

the option to record in ogg would be kool :!:
but only if jules can implement it in 5 min's, would still rather folder tracks or snapshots :P

Regarding MP3-- It can't be THAT hard of a fix...? When Live knows that it's importing an MP3, it just offsets the time a bit and snips it to the right size.

Or am I missing something?

well ... for a start ... what if theres INTENDED silence at the start of a loop ???

(although if the bit of silence .mp3 adds is a constant size that could be worked round)

Very interesting - thanks Rob! So that applies even when you convert mp3 back to wav? ie the file doesn't get fixed?
