All of Sire Tugger's suggestions are excellent choices, even though I have an automatic national pride trigger response for Rush (I mean come on, Geddy Lee sang on the McKenzie Bros.'s album. Take off, eh!)

I'd add in as possible contenders Cabaret Voltaire, Galaxie 500, or Nirvana.

Well, Rush certainly are a fine three piece. But my favorite three piece is the Three Piece Fish & Chips deal w/ Cole Slaw, Fries & Sweet Tea from Captain D's Seafood.
MMMM.... :hihi:

Add to that list the original Tony Williams Lifetime.I'm also surprised that nobody's mentioned Cream yet...

Rod, Jane and Freddy. No contest (at least to UK folks of a certain age).

I was in the drumline in H.S and had Rush posters that covered my walls, like thousands of others.

Although I have expanded my library, Rush will always be my all time favorite.

Band of gypsies
Big Sugar
Bill Frisell/Kermit Driscoll/Joey Baron
Sjako
Beck, Bogert & Appice
Beck, Hymas & Bozzio

Didnt Rush do a concept album about Ayn Rand :?

Viva the extreme-right neo-cons!!!

Anyway, I think that Pavement had to do with the best Rush moment anyway - bloody winey prog-rock

well, my three piece band enjoyments are

Husker Du
Yo La Tengo
Nirvana
PJ Harvey (her band on her first two records)
Sugar (Mr Mould again, and my very first gig as well!!)

Peter, Paul and Mary.
The Three Degrees.
I'll even take the horror that was
Wings.

Anything other than Rush.

Is there a worse three piece?

Is there a worse band of any size?

Well, I was refraining from the "best" line of thinking on my previous comment, but since you mention it, Beck and any other two guys is always my first choice, make one of them Bozzio and everybody else may as well sit on the sidelines and watch, as far as I'm concerned. (For that matter, Bozzio and two other drummers would be all right with me!)

Not even.

Not even (whisper it quietly) Yes.

Well except for marillion, obviously.

Jon Butcher's first band- the Jon Butcher Axis.
Joe Satriani's original trio. While Joe became a little too much  of a wanker for my tastes in later years, his show over at First Avenue for the Surfing With The Alien tour is one of the best three shows I've seen
