I wouldn't call that patch "excellent", but if you're after that sound there's a closer version available for the Virus here:

Here's an audio demo of that patch

That's the sound I think of when I think Oberheim. It's a shame Oberheim is so under-represented in software. The best thing that I've found is SimSynth Live from Image-Line... they don't make a big deal about it being tailored after an Oberheim but it really sounds like what I hear on Moving Pictures... it's really unique for a VA.
I second that SimSynth Live is the closest softsynth I have found in getting Geddy Lee's Obie sounds, especially on Signals. For the lead on Tom Sawyer(MiniMoog), Arturia's MiniMoog gets close . For the intro to Subdivisions, SimSynth gets damn close after opening it up a little! And Arturia Minimoog V for the lead GD_Lead3.

Superwave has a jump preset that is excellent but I always use a good brass sound layered with a MiniMoog V bass sound.

I did a close sounding patch on my DX7 years ago, but I did use a stereo chorus on my DX7. As the FM7 has an effect section it might be very possible to get the sound. Hmmmm.... have to find the time to port my DX7 patches to FM7

Are you not aware of the evil that will befall you for playing "Jump"?

This is illegal in many countries, and vigilantes will hunt you down if you do this!

Play "Jump", go to jail......if you do the crime, you gotta do the time....

Now that was funny!!

Those are some pretty good patches! "Jump" would certainly be adequate for my needs (if I had a V*rus).

It has, as does Op-X Pro II. Both of these are close emulations of the Ob-X. I don't see how people would consider SimSynth Live closer to an Ob-X than these (unless they don't know them). And you also have the Arturia SEM V (not an Ob-X, but you can get the sound).

Just out of curiosity why would you bother to answer a question 8 years 7 months and 29 days later ? :?

Van Halen Jump

The first thing that hits my mind is OP-X 8)

Haha. It takes a long time to Jump, especially as you're getting older! ;)

Beyond the troll nature of the question (Something so simple? You're in trouble!) it's a nice (ie well known) example of how things can have more going on than a quick listening glance suggests. Both reverb and tape are part of the sound, and it may have been recorded via mic and speaker too. Then there's which version you mean? You'll find that there's multiple different mastered versions, which all sound slightly different from each other!

Virtual stuff still lacks slightly at the low end, compared to the real units. But (8 years on) they're close enough for this purpose, and Diva will manage it better than any of the dedicated emu's out there. Not just because of the built in reverb, but because (tip ;) ) you can slightly rough up the sound with careful use of HPF|Bite (used pre Uhbie filter) too.

Without the tricks, for that sound, Obxd and Diva sound near identical. OP-X is great, but that's an example where it can't get bright / raw enough sounding.

And this might be the answer to the secret of this particular sound's appeal. Running your analog synth through a tube amp and miking the cab is rather cool.

Synth1 has that preset in a bank too.
