Soundwise Volcano is the best filter plugin out there. Like some other people, I've tried them all. Including Frantic.
Have you checked out CamelPhat 3 and CamelSpace? They do a lot more than just filtering, so perhaps you categorize them as multi-effects rather than filters, which is fair enough. However, CamelPhat3 does offer three filters (configurable band pass, plus multi-mode filter), including ten different filter types plus an envelope follower. CamelSpace's filter can be modulated from a step sequencer. They are first and foremost multi-effects, but if you're looking for a filter, then its worth checking them out to see if they meet your needs, especially given that you can pick up the PhatSpace bundle for around the price of one of these filters.

Hi Ben :)

Unfortunately I still haven't, there's so much to check out nowadays :D (didn't have a net connection at home for 6 months, lots of catching up to do)

Will do soon though. I'm familiar with CamelPhat Free and SuperCamelPhat though, been a devoted user of the former since day one. And I've always liked it :) And SuperCamelPhat 2 was a jawdropper, certain features such as the Magic EQ... that whole plugin sounds good indeed.

bimanic, are you working for fabfilter?! or are you fabfilter?
Eh? no.. neither. I have no connection with fabfilter. I just like the sound of volcano. IMHO it's superior to anything else. Actually, are you working for the guys that make Frantic?

I did a quick demo of what volcano can do. Listen to especially the very high resonance at high cutoff how it seemlessly disappears into the inaudible range. This is where most other filters fail breakin up into aliasing or some weird distortion.

Download volcano example

Here's the original loop

Have a bit of patience with listening. The example is 5:15 long and most of the really cool stuff start happening at 1:30 or so. The demo is made in FL Studio, recording audio in realtime, ONLY volcano was used.. not even a final limiter at the end as volcano limits itself very well.

Cheers!

I tried both Frantic and Volcano.

Since I'm not the drumloop-through-filter guy, I made my tests using a sawtooth wave from a synthesizer.

To me, fabfilter's best sounding algorithm so far is the FF1 filter. The other filter types in Volcano are not so impressive, IMO.

I also like Frantic a lot. My favorite filter type here is the 4-pole Minimoog filter.

HI

I have never really recovered from having a hardware 'Sherman Filterbank' .....

For smooth I don't think Antares is noticably improved on, and QF does a lot for the buck - sorry but none of the 3 new filters do anything much for me, that the aforementioned don't do and then there is that 1 KILLER sweeping filter pre-set on the PSP filter which IMO leaves them ALL standing.

Yea 3 filters is enough for me - blimey I want to upgrade Phat V2 for Phat V3 as that can do some nice stuff for a silly price.

Flipper.

Volcano rocks if you ask me. I love the sound of it :)

Thanks, actually, I just chopped it up myself and started writing a song from it! The part where it buzzes like a bass synth is just freaky. :hihi:

Yes it can, I might have overdone it a bit but people keep complaining I make too subtle demos!! :help:

It can "weep"? Does it have A.I.? :D

I really liked the self-limiting, it was hard to make it clip. I like just being able to insert it and go, no mucking about with compressors.

Flipper.
Which Phat are you talking about? Phatmatik Pro? I think this is at v1.2, and will be upgraded to v2. But I can't find anything about the new features or pricing. Do you have any info?

thanks

I think he's referring to the filter effect plugin, Camel's CamelPhat which has been recently upgraded from v2 to v3.

I have no clue what you can do with a non midi-triggerable filter...(well, ok, i have, but its so limited)
How can they even release a filter without that ?
Are there musicians in their house ?
