Yes it is strange that companies release effects at all, when they could turn everything into instruments. Especially those that already offer a synth based on similar technology.pummel wrote:Why just a filter ? Why not toss in a pair of osc and make it a full synth ?
Had a play around with this demo, very excellent, and really easy to work with. Compared it to the Frantic demo, which has an excellent sound, but I found it a bit harder to work with. I might be in the mood for another superfilter, I'm off to check out the Filterscape demo again to see which fits me best.

its got oscillators! - band-limited oscillators are no big thing - but filters are much trickier to implement (particularly moving ones...) - so they are proud of their filters ergo the name. This kicks filterscapes butt btw imho xox m

Patience is a virtue. If you read the fabfilter forums you'll see that they are indeed planning a BIG synth now that volcano is done.
As for volcano, it is EXCELLENT. IMHO much better sounding than frantic, which I was a bit disappointed with. The sound is much livelier in volcano, somehow much more 'real'. Granted, frantic is more flexible but personally basic sound quality wins over every time.
just my 2 cents,
bManic

I think this is actually a lot more useful than a new synth. Since it's envelope triggered, I can use it as a filter replacement for any synth I already have. I've been doing this to good effect with Reaktor 5 this morning.

Unfortunately NOT volcano. This is one HUGE drawback of it. It doesn't seem to respond to MIDI NOTE ON messages at all. So you can not trigger it from a keyboard. It seems to have an envelope follower only. I've already critizised them on their forum for the lack of this. The company really does seem like a bunch of lab-coat dudes that come up with wonderful sounding software but have no clue what-so-ever about making music with it.kuniklo wrote:I think this is actually a lot more useful than a new synth. I'm not buying it before they fix this issue. I'd also like to see midi note triggerable LFO's.

Does anyone remember (or use) Antares Filter? Doesn't it have four independent filters? Anyone know if it's as good as Volcano?bmanic wrote:As for volcano, it is EXCELLENT. Hang on, it has a demo, guess I'll have to hear for myself...

i miss in volcano to modulate every parameter, so i think modulations matrix in frantic is much better. you can modulate everything, build a step-sequencer with the matrix and midi and the modies seem to be no problem in frantic. volcano has "only" high and low pass / band modies. frantic has 40 modies in combination 800, freaky
) i checked out both, like the gfx interface in volcano better then in frantic...the punch that frantic gives in the bass frequency with selfosscilation is really analouge. volcano has only 2 lfo, frantic 4 and they are very fast. has volcano an env follower?!
i want to buy one of these new filters, but i dont know which is better. personally it seems that frantic will be my choice. are there any alternatives with the same features?
there are only some days for the discount price of both filters.
maybe it is better for waiting the magazin results?!
marc,
best wishes from the switzerland

@VstSchrauber
other alternatives are:
PSP Nitro
Ohmforce Quadfrohmage
Uhe Filterscape
Antares Filter
They are all quite different, and have strenghts and weaknesses. You will have a hard time choosing.

Yeah, it is a little difficult with each having its own strengths. Antares filter (though expensive) looks pretty darn cool.
I have filterscape, and learned some things today about it which I have yet to try, but may end up blowing my mind. So......
