I was gonna say ValveTone 62, but it looks like you're after more of a distortion plug, in which case I'd say Trash or CamelPhat3.

Voxengo Boogex. Absolutely the best for synth sounds, and I've tried them all... especially since you mention wanting to achieve sounds like on those old Prodigy things.

For more subtle work, Voxengo also caters. Lampthruster and Warmifier are the two to go to.

From those already mentioned, Daniel's plugins are indeed nice. Antares' Tube is underrated in doing subtle things. PSP products are overrated according to my ears - they can do great stuff in moderation but I'd still choose something else for any specific task.

Add the usual disclaimer about opinions and so on :)

@jmh talking of opinions: what do you think about izotope trash?

BTW i'm also gonna dowload boogex, just to try

p.s. a new version of greasetube is highly desireable...that plug sounds really nice to me, I didn't have time to see any potential bug, just sounded right, only thing i noticed is the too small sized gui:
man, have to wear glasses to see where those sliders and buttons are?

my point exactly! :-D

just tried boogex...i have to say that i'm impressed, messing around with parameters i came in a few minutes really close to the sound i have in mind.
One question: what kind of wav files does the plug use as impulses? Where i find them? Errrmm actually I know of impulses in reverb, how this concept apply to an amplifier?

same system - different impulses

basically you can create impulses from any sound-changing device/room/whatever - the impulse is always used for calculating the change the device/room/whatever creates onto the source you feed through the plugin which uses the impulse...

Boogex is usually fed with impulses taken from cabinets...

try izotope trash, it's maybe overkill for just tube sound but it definately delivers a good one.

a best freeware is imo tube booster.

Check out www.noisevault.com for quite some impulses.

From the "everything in a box" guitar effect things, to my ears it's the best one. Feels a tad clumsy to use, but the sound makes up for it. I've always thought about it as "Guitar Rig that actually delivers" :D

(Have to mention that I'm not a guitar player nor do I use these things for effecting guitar sounds in general. My opinions come from trying these things with all the other possible sound sources, and it's just as difficult to find suitable distortion/overdrive effects for vocals, drums, basses and synths IMHO as it is for guitars)

And glad to hear you tried out Boogex. It's my favorite distortion/overdrive plugin for synth sounds, as I can make it exactly the way I want.

For warming up and pumping synths and drums (very much old electro and prodigy sounding)I love'd muon's buzz effect Smoother drive. I just found the VST version called mdrive that comes free with the tau2 demo.
Going to see if it has the same sound right now.

Though I would never buy it just for this effect, if you already have B4, it has a great tube amp channel. I use it with the drive setting down or barely on, and it rocks for adding a warm tube imitation. I also run a parallel track with Valvetone blended in and its as close as I can get for tube warmth in the digital domain.

Just tried mdrive and it sounds good but not as airy as I was thinking before. But smooth cliping and warm. It adds kind some analg niceness but the character is a bit static compared to the pump and pop of a true tube. Great sound for the CPU lowness!

Actaully I am playing around with it now (it's good) and I like the speaker placement because I can pahse out some of the high end and it gives it a nice hollow sound.
The GUI is fine I think.
