I know that the warmth of valve can't be replaced by just a vst effect and other bla bla bla...but as far as you all know, what's the best vst-clone of a valve-harmonic(or even odd)-distortion-unit around?

There are many out there. I think Voxegno Tube Amp is better than some expensive ones. PSP MixSaturator is nice to, and does tape distortion as well.

gonna try some demos

imo there's only one answer: GreaseTube - I mention this so often but few people seem to care - but that's their own disadvantage after all  - I am a big Voxengo fan but GreaseTube is so far beyond TubeAmp in terms of both sound-quality and flexibility that I think it's nonsense to even just mention TubeAmp nowadays :? - GreaseTube also completely smokes the Antares tube-thingamajic...

jens, technically, why is it superior then? if you haven't got any details on WHY the sound is better, it's only a matter of preference no?

erm ... Greasetube appears to no longer exist. From what I can tell, it was a MONO guitar amp simulator. I don't consider this to be remotely like Voxengo Tube Amp. I don't think the original poster was requesting a guitar amp simulator - I presumed he was wanting a plugin that emulates tube distortion. Big difference. Guitar amps have specific eq's. So I agree, if you actually wanted a guitar amp sim, Voxengo Tube Amp isn't (as the name might imply) what you might want ... But if you want to impart some tubey goodness without affecting EQ or adding cabinet simulation etc, try it.

I've checked some a week or so ago, those were TbT plugs, Voxengo, Antares, Camel, PSP.

Antares Tube unbeatable on drums and everything that likes some crunch on peaks.

Mix Saturator is interesting and capable of very usefull results. Their Mix Pressor has that quality as well.

Saturated Driver - smooth. Same with Voxengo. Those are only good for very gentle effect. Voxengo Tube Amp behaves very odd, like an a mp with falty tubes - it simply compresses to death if you push it.

SuperCamelPhat2 - good for instant drum track distortion, but it really adds plastic to sound if compared to Antares Tube.

I liked Antares Tube the best for crunch and Mix Saturator for exciter kinda work.

jens, where can I get this plug to try?

Greasetube can be found on TBT's FTP server.... login details are on his site....

me neither - that's my actual point after all! ;-)

we agree here
Big difference.
that actually depends on the specific application and the flexibility of the plugin
Guitar amps have specific eq's.
at least if they're good

yes, try it - as I already wrote: UYE ;-)

for sure I am - outstanding quality which gets mentioned far too little does this to me! ;-)

It's like everyone is mentioning what a great singer & artist Britney Spears is but no-one mentions Heather Nova. Imo that's not just a matter of taste...

DLed it and after a quick try I can say it's got some serious phase problems (the modelled amp, I mean). Cool plug, tho. Totallly changes sound of fed material. Thank you guys. It, however, is not comparable to Antares, Camel and such as those are not modelled after lo-fi or broke tubes :)

Post

And could we PLEASE get a detailed description of what parameters that you guys use in the Greasetube
so I can make a bigger GUI version with only the essential stuff in it.

I mean the "speaker sim" IS a phase crapper so.....

//Daniel :)
