herodotus, thanks a bazillion for the Schoenberg Center link....hadn't come across that one, and now I've got something to listen to this afternoon
i have a CD of Schoenberg Septets, that i used to listen to 2-3 times a day, for probably close to three years...i just HAD to internalize every note, every moment... It still gets spun a few times a week....absolutely brilliant, breathtaking, inspiring genius......imo of course

This is redundant, but here goes anyway. Stupidest thing I ever heard anyone say about music was something along the lines of "It's not a matter of taste, it's not a matter of opinion -- some music is JUST PLAIN BAD... PERIOD."
Need I mention the utterer of this opin- erm, I mean this Universal Truth believed himself to be the one true and qualified arbiter of what was bad music? :-} Enlightenment comes in odd packages sometimes.

A friend and I were performing at an all-night party after a college buddy of mine got temporarily married back in the mid '80s. My friend was using an Alpha Syntauri computer music system (Apple IIC based with a green screen monitor). The party was in a big farm house and we were set up in bottom floor of the big square staircase in the core of the house. People were camped out all around us (most of them on various mind-altering substances). After we had made a few hours of very strange noises live, we set the instruments to play sequences and took a break.
. . . some guy comes up to my friend, points at the computer and asks, "How do you make that do that?"
My friend opens his mouth to answer, then realizes what a fucktarded question it is, clamps his mouth shut and walks away.
