Am I doing something wrong, the pictures at the link are the same size as the ones displayed here. Are there larger ones somewhere else?

Hey whyterabbyt,

I'm actually not entirely sure, but I think that the answer is "no" at this point (if memory serves). I'll see what I can find out for you in the meantime. Sorry this isn't a very definitive answer. :?
so we will still have to wrap with directixer for MIDI functionalitity?

honestly, when i read that you were going to host VST natively, i also assumed you would do it right.

it's starting to look like a hack...

the MIDI output of a VST should be selectable as the input for another VST.

please?

No, that was my fault. Like I said at first, it looked like the forum software automatically resized the pictures, on my screen.......maybe it's firefox, I don't know. Someone said they were too big, so I got rid of the big pictures, and replaced them with smaller pics. I used the same names as before, so the img tag pulled up the smaller pictures. the big ones(1280x1040) are on my laptop at home. I'll try to put them back on later.

{EDIT} I don't know what is going on...that website saved my other pictures to original size, but not these........I'll have to do some investigating.

It seems the files were too big, and were automatically reduced. I'll need to find a way to save the larger .jpg in a smaller file.

Technically, I think there is no 'right'. Passing MIDI from VSTs isn't (or wasnt) part of the VST spec. Why d'you think Steinberg have a different standard of their own for MIDI plugins? The whole thing is very fuzzy, really, and the hosts which originally supported MIDI-processing VSTs were actually the 'hacks'. (In a good way.)

And yes, its a shame if S5 doesnt support it. But there are ways round it. (Not just DirectiXer)

Doesn't sound like a VST wrapper problem at all. AFAIK, you can't route the output of a DX Instrument/effect either........

Looks more like a feature you want, than something not working right.

good points, but

i guess i was referring more to functionality rather than specs when i used the word "right".

and yeah, i guess that means i just want it to work.

SONAR could use better MIDI tools and workflow anyway, so i was hoping for this for a long time now.

*Just placed my order*

I'm most excited about the tightly integrated views and the ability to basically turn any synth or effect parameter into an lfo (with the tempo-synced parameters) - awesome! Throw in a convolution reverb and graphical pitch correction and I never had a chance.

Now I need to convince myself that this will be my last upgrade, that this is all any reasonable person needs to make music. I have a feeling when version 6 comes around with quicker automation, the ability to arm recording during playback and another RGC masterpiece, I still won't stand a chance.

If Sonar5 would allow me to build a groove, without having to hit stop(the way you can in Reason, Cubase, Logic, Magix Midi Studio etc.......this may very well be my last upgrade.

I've already placed my S5 PE upgrade order as well. What I really like is that Cakewalk is including both 32bit and 64bit coded versions (Win XP 64 here I come)with SONAR 5. There is already 64bit drivers available for my audio card(Delta) and MIDI interface(Edirol) and with SONAR 5's new BitBridge technology, (which allows any 32 bit VST/VSTi plugins to work in a 64 bit environment), you can use all your exisiting plugins, as well. :-o

So....the only thing I need is for UA to release 64bit drivers, for my UAD-1 card.

I'm with you on this one - that's going to be absolutely necessary to get my $180 in September 06'. I'm also pretty shocked that we didn't get Project 5's arpeggiator, Live-style automation and tempo-track (although this isn't a huge issue since we can dock the tempo view). Since I wished for but NEVER expected convolution reverb and pitch correction, I'm not complaining too loudly. :)

Ok, so I started looking into the Sonar 4.03 Demo a bit more this morning and I came up with two questions/concerns/issues:

1) I'm a huge Reason fan and I love ReWire - however, it seems I'm limited to 16 devices with Sonar using MIDI channels for devices. Am I incorrect in this?

2) I can't seem to get my Evolver to correctly sync up with Sonar. Midi Sync is being sent out of Sonar and it is received by the Evolver but the downbeats of the click in Sonar do not match up to the LED progress display of the sequence on the Evolver itself. This may be more of an Evolver-user question, but hey.

On the other hand, I don't think Sonar's learning curve is really that difficult and it looks like a decent host upgrade for me.

i believe that most of the great features: convolution reverb, pitch correction, etc. are only available on the producer edition. Am i wrong?

I don't use Reason, but I understand that it IS limited to 16 Rewire devices (although some people say that the fact that Sonar 5 includes a REX player helps somewhat). Can't help with your other question.

Studio Edition doesn't have the new effects, but it does include the truly excellent Sonitus suite, which includes one of the best native non-convolution reverbs IMO, as well as top-notch EQ, Delay, Compression, Gate, etc. Of course, even without the extras, Sonar is a pretty stacked host - you still get per-clip effects, in-line editing, tempo-synced envelopes, one of the better "freezes", extensive track lane features for comping, etc.
