I think he just told you Bones, the SOUND! If you use the Randomizer or program the sound in, you get very usable patches that can be used in various types of music. That makes this synth VERY versatile, which incidentally your synths aren't.....No offense meant, but your synths have a very narrow appeal, but Oatmeal seems to appeal to almost everyone!

I'm not meaning to slam BONES' stuff!
Just really digging Oatmeal!

You have a point there, but I believe that's because it has such a tiny GUI that it's almost impossible to program. The fact is that every patch from the random button inspires me for a short improvisation; and that's meaningful, whatever it meansBONES wrote:... all I hear from the rest of you is that it has a great random patch feature. WTF!?!
With a larger GUI this synth is a killer, IMO.
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

but the randomizer makes lazy and at least for me it only produces the same three or for different sounds in slight variation over and over again.
And since people tend to make banks of randomized patches it narrows the soundspectrum of the synth.
There have been a few really tasty patches in TC's bank, I bet these were programmed from scratch

Can't wait for the bigger gui. Try as you might, but a tiny one is a tiny one no matter the colours. Save your ideas til they can at least become useable.

What sound? The oscillators don't sound particularly huge to me and I haven't thus far been able to get a decent modulated, resonant filter sound from it either. [It might be there but, as I said, without reading the manual I couldn't get it to work]. It also seems pretty light on cross-modulation options, too. OTOH, most of my synths have cross-mod options up the ying-yang and way more flexibility in their modulation in general. And of course, any instrument without Unison is going to sound weak in comparison to any with so that's another drawback. Plus, even with 8 voice Unison my BRAINkILLER uses less CPU than Oatmeal does.Willabong wrote:I think he just told you Bones, the SOUND! BRAINKILLER: Well thats one I never even heard of Bones, and I can't find it on your site, so I will take your word for it!
The sound generated by Oatmeal is stronger than sounds generated by for example Synth 1. And we all know how good a synth that is. I'm not saying that your synths aren't very good, because they ARE. But if your synths are so versatile, why do you need to make so many versions?
Oatmeal is a classic bread and butter synth IMHO, and while I use your synths a lot, I will use this one more!

I think the buzz from this synth clearly shows it's true worth despite what other seemingly jealous developers may say
. What I was wondering is whether any skinners plan to up-size the GUI...

While I thought the original color scheme was just right, ezeeboogie's Nord GUI is pretty tasty!
Thanks!
I agree with both Ja.x and rokkon's assessments of the randomizer... Like Ja.x, I am prone to short improvisations while creating new patches. Eventually I'll commit the improvisations to actual songs!
But like rokkon, I have to admit that the randomizer is a wee bit limited after awhile. Once the initial novelty has worn off, the self-generated patches all start to sound similar (and are even named similarly... I think I've exhausted every possible "Stalin" name!
) But still, every one in 10-15 randomized preset is just amazing!

A bigger and more usable GUI would be sweet. I'm not sure at all how to define "more usable", though.

I haven't tried the synth yet but I love randomizers. Not for their ease of use, but for quickly generating presets that you can then deconstruct and see what makes them tick. It's a great way to learn how to apply your own intentions to a particular synth. Some of HG's synths have randomizers for particular sections, as well as the whole synth. That's even nicer as you can limit the randomize function to just a part of the synth you're having trouble grasping, or want to be surprised with.Yagushi wrote:...like rokkon, I have to admit that the randomizer is a wee bit limited after awhile...
