If you could have only one synth, what would you choose?

There are hybrid instruments and there have been for a long time. For example, I owned a Korg DSS1 back in the 80s. It was a synth with sampling capabilities. But it had integral waveforms and additive synthesis capabilities:

Its 'if you could only have one synth, what would you choose?'
And yet you think you're in charge of the list of elegible responses.
Well I dont think its your call what my response is allowed to be.I thought the man asked which synth would you choose if you could only have one. I don't think he asked for your deserted island sampler.
But it doesnt sample. Dont you pay attention?Yes, that is what Kontakt primarily does. Really.
You do seem fixated on Kontakt though. Is it because you'd rather repeat the single example you have than acknowledge something more problematic to your argument, like Falcon.

No, but, I wouldn't have though that asking for the one only synth you would choose would come up with sampler suggestions.whyterabbyt wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:06 pm Well I dont think its your call what my response is allowed to be.
Well... I won't do it your way, and ask for an "authoritive" source for that kind of definition now.

Yes. NI lists Kontakt as a sampler though, not a hybrid instrument. Even though it surely can do a lot of stuff a simple sampler cannot do.tony10000 wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:06 pm There are hybrid instruments and there have been for a long time. Again, I think the primary focus of the software is important for its categorization, and for distinction to other software.
And picture editing tool can draw as well. They're not drawing tools though. They're picture editors... because that's their main focus, even though they can do other stuff as well. None of them as elaborate as real image creation tools though. Same mostly applies here really.

Yup. Its a pretty grey area, especially since the underlying code is basically likely to be very similar from eg single-cycle wavetables, to scanning through multiple-cycle wavetables, to scanning through the entirety of a longer arbitrary-cycle wavetable (aka 'sample') to scanning arbitrary short fragments of a longer arbitrary-cycle wavetable (aka 'grains')tony10000 wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:06 pm There are hybrid instruments and there have been for a long time. Though some people have difficulty with nuance.

Correct, you wouldnt have thought.chk071 wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:11 pm No, but, I wouldn't have though that asking for the one only synth you would choose would come up with sampler suggestions.
Personally I'm aware that its not uncommon for some people to use 'synth' as a synonym for 'instrument' so, unlike you, didnt assume what the OP might or might not have included.

Well... let's leave it at that, as you're obviously unwilling, and not capable of seeing the point of distinguishing what is meant.whyterabbyt wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:22 pmCorrect, you wouldnt have thought.chk071 wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:11 pm No, but, I wouldn't have though that asking for the one only synth you would choose would come up with sampler suggestions.

Interesting. What's the difference between a 'picture editor' and a 'real image creation tool?'chk071 wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:12 pm And picture editing tool can draw as well. Got examples of each? Im not really familiar with the distinction between the terms.
Also what's the difference between a 'picture editor' and an 'image editor' or even a 'raster graphics editor'

And then he comes with precise distinctions. Priceless.whyterabbyt wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:27 pmInteresting. Seriously, get back to your cave, man. You're not at all capable of holding a proper discussion.

And there you go, having made distinctions you're not capable of explaining. Priceless.chk071 wrote: Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:29 pmAnd then he comes with precise distinctions.
