Out of those 4, 2 and 4 look the best to me. 2 being an absolute favorite - looks like a super-duper versions of Virus with multiple displays etc. Great stuff!

Great Urs thanks. Looking much forward to it.Urs wrote:I have no idea. We're working like mad on so many things, currently Zebra 2.8 and Repro have precedence, but also Zebra 3. I hope to leverage some work for Zebra3 into Hive, just like Hive was a stepping stone in building Zebra 3.

I don't find any of those designs aesthetically superior to the original, but I've become more accepting of the U-He approach that the GUI shouldn't be too eye-catching. Still quite like the look of Ace though.
Regarding Wavetables. I think with the release of ANA 2 and Ableton's new one, the writing's on the wall for people's expectations of the feature-set of commercial/dance orientated synths. Hive either needs a sonic boost, or needs to be quietly hidden away. I suppose the real question is how do you do that in a genuinely interesting way, rather than just bandwagon jumping.

I personally feel that Hive's current GUI looks AMAZING and the hexagon doesn't slow me down a bit!
Not too crazy about those early design concepts. They just aren't Hive.

It is great to see the progress that you are making on the redesign of Hive.
I like interfaces 2 & 3 best, and would like to see several available color schemes.
In addition to more waveforms, I would also love to see user loadable wavetables and a drum sequencer with numerous drumsets and sequences.
I would say that you should take a close look at Vengeance Sound Avenger for guidance as to the direction that you should take with future versions of Hive. That synth is aimed directly at the EDM market that Hive wants to capture.

I might get stoned for this but...I like the orignal skin most
BUt i also like all the variants provided as options to choose from
its a bit offtopic, but... yesterday i was watching Blade Runner and...was Tyrell N6 name was inspired by Blade Runner's Tyrell company name and theyr released cyborg N6 ?

I like the old UI... but three looks absolutely scrumptious!

For fear of jumping on the bandwagon, 2 looks amazing, both in terms of layout and 'vibe'

I very much like 2 and 4.
I want to like 3, but I cannot yet figure out why I don't.
At the moment, I am using satYatunes' "Serenity" skin for Hive. I know it adds absolutely no new concept or clever tricks when compared to the original skin, but it is so much more pleasing to my eyes.

Busy days at u-he, huh? Repro-5 beta, this, ... good times!

Well, the thing about Hive certainly isn't waveform variety. It's always been "look how much you can do with so few features". It wasn't about what we added over synths like Sylenth, it was about what we left away (making a single page synthesis view possible...), and omitting any constraints to route modulations wherever. Hive has become a extraordinarily dynamic synth, but it's dressed up like a kind that's usually static.knowix wrote:Regarding Wavetables. I was certain form the beginning that adding more waveforms would be key to unlock a whole lot more sound universes. However, I did some tests with some fancy synthesis methods and they just wouldn't fit the bill. I also think that sets of static waveforms aren't gonna cut it, otherwise I would have done that long time ago.
So lately I'm thinking vector synthesis, maybe with spatial qualities ("stereo waveforms", if that term exists) or even wavetables. Both methods (vector & wavetable) have never really resonated well with me though. So I have yet to find the spark that makes me jump into development. I do however find the open source editor from Synthesis Technology quite intrigueing, and I'm of course knee deep in the realtime wave morphing technology for Zebra 3. So it might very well be that something like it pops up one day.
There are loads and loads of other alternatives, including sample playback, FM and what not. We do have to find something that pairs well with Hive's modulation capabilities though. Sample playback usually isn't it (apart from glitch or granular) and FM requires a whole different set of parameters.
We'll see... but everyone can be certain that Hive won't be "quietly hidden away".

I personaly find it very "unatractive". Even tho the sound is great but because of GUI (mainly colors) i find it not fun to use at allknowix wrote:Still quite like the look of Ace

After demoing Hive and Sylenth1 way to long - I finally bought Hive yesterday. (Getting the Repro-5 update for free, convinced me that U-He is the company I should support).
The original Hive skin and draft #2 is my favorites. In draft #2 I especially like the one-line sequencer, and the central modulation, but I'm not to fond of the yellow displays, I would prefer blue.
Otherwise, looking at Sylenth1, I find the Apox skin by Mikael Eidenberg, gorgeous. (The knobs with small white dots, the color scheme and the unnecessary cooling ribs connects with me):

What about some variations of the hexagon, it is after all, the heart and soul of Hive
