Eh, how about *right now*? :) I've added some indications myself. Feel free to download my modified script here and use it; on a Mac, it should go in:

Code: Select all

/Library/Application Support/u-he/Satin/Scripts
It looks like this:

I haven't been able to test it with 'cinematic' size yet (perhaps the width of the labels needs to be increased a tiny bit), but it does seem to work fine up to 'huge'. (If you're not happy with the lay-out, search the Satin.txt file for the text blocks preceded by the line "/*** ADDED: ***/" and modify them according to your preference.)

It's no synth, therefore wasn't considered (at least not by me). Still not sure about it. I never used undo/redo myself with realtime effects.
Imho they should just be there; I mentioned this earlier too. What does it matter whether it's a synth or not?

The corresponding images are in the bundle, so I tried adding undo/redo buttons to the Theme, but no joy yet.

Not really. I wanted maximum authenticity and real-world behaviour. Wrapping the program's envelope around the hiss is not what a real machine does. With one exception: noise reduction ;)
Ok ;) Would be sometimes only a good feature if a track is silent. The only solution is to use the compander, I think uhx Type I is the most efficient type for lowest noise?

Perhaps you could just insert a noise gate effect after Satin?

Type II supresses even more.

Great! The NR is a bit like a compressor/expander so theoretically it doesn't decrease the dynamic? A side effect is eventually some coloring?

There's some clever people around here. Nice one! Cheers :D

Urs:

I don't make a habit of feature requests....but since purchasing Satin and running it through its paces, I feel the need ask a few questions.

If some of these have been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I apologize.

1. Could the the IPS knob track linear?: 15IP at top center? I wouldn't mind 7.5, 15 and 30ips actually printed around the knob.

2. Is it possible so the settings for each mode are remembered as one flips between the 3 modes (and possibly adjust something within each mode)?

3. Is it possible to get control values to display upon mouse rollover, rather than clicking on controls?

4. Can the trigger itself get an actual time value?

We will do that, but that's one of the many things we need to add to our framework (affecting all of our products). Currently, our main display can't show arbitrary values to do free conversion of numbers to strings, like '1/th note' or '3.42 kHz'. We are already showing static string with controls that have integer values, like buttons or drop-down menus, but controls like sliders which contain float values can currently only be shown directly by their value.

As fiddling with the framework equals open-heart surgery, we can't serve with an ad-hoc solution, therefore it takes a while. As Urs pointed out, it's on our list.
Alright, so maybe it would be better to have fixed values while being synchronized.

So it seems I'll get it before it's sorted after all ;).

Wow, clever !

But what are the 3/16, 5/16, 6/16 and 7/16 values ?!

I'm kinda lost here, sorry, always been bad with maths.

I asked for that too. I found it isn't so bad since you always revert to the default 15ips position by using CTRL + Mouseclick, but marking the positions is still a good idea.

Good suggestion, also the value of drive (db) would be better off permanetly displayed on the big INPUT GAIN Knob.

Yeah, I kind of suck at maths myself as well. :)

Btw, to answer my own question on how to convert delay times from ms to inches: use seconds, not ms (i.e. divide by 1000), then multiply by the value of the tape speed parameter - which is, after all, expressed in inches per second. For math-challenged folks like us, perhaps it would make sense to explicitly mention this 'formula' in the manual. :)

As Urs mentioned earlier:
3 = 3 x 1/16th = dotted 1/8th

Similarly, 6 = 6 x 1/16th = dotted 1/4th.

I don't know if 5/16 and 7/16 can be notated differently; I actually like it just as shown myself. But it's very easy to replace the text with something else according to your preferences. Search Satin.txt for e.g. "3/16" (which should only occur once in the file) and replace it with e.g. "1/8." (If you don't manage to perform the required edits yourself, don't hesitate to ask for help. I'll be glad to help you customise your Satin a bit.)

I actually thought the same for a split second, but then decided I like it exactly how it is now. Nevertheless, I hope this parameter will undergo some changes in a future revision, to support lower speeds. And in turn, that would necessitate a redesign of the knob scaling, I assume.

As for marking the positions, I sure can help you with that right away. I made some further modifications to Satin's GUI script, adding more indications for knob positions (get the modified Satin theme, version 2 here, same instructions as above):

I left the additional min/max value indications out for some of the knobs, as they are pretty obvious without them imho. But if anyone cares, I'll be glad to add those, too.

That looks way too busy now with all those labels in the Service tab. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I agree. :) I already thought so when adding the delay time values, actually. I was thinking of using a darker grey font colour, but that would only go so far - it would still be 'busy'. Any suggestions for improvement are very welcome, of course.

Btw, if theming support would be added - I don't think it currently is - this would be slightly less of a concern, as we could switch back and forth between ugly/explicit and sexy looks. :) Also, we could make some themes that would only/mainly show the meters for having a bunch of instances in Studio mode on screen simultaneously.
