They are charging you to access a feature on hardware you already own. What next, are they going to charge to access extra polyphony?

Yes. But it's ok since I was never going to buy it full price, and the synth isn't crippled anyway. 20€ for little extra space and sounds. Oh, and you need that SL to use some of those third party soundbanks.

Only when they're buying something reduced to $49.99 with one voucher and then applying the $25 monthly voucher bringing it down to $25.

Eventide has a guitar pedal that has more effects the more you pay for it. It makes sense, you're paying because you're interested in the services/functionalities a pedal provides, not the printed boards inside. I do, anyways.
They could just say, "this pedal is $250 with full functionalities. If can't afford it or not interested in paying for bells and whistles, too bad for you."

They do not charge to access extra polyphony. It's the only extra feature they charge for, although they do charge for preset packs (some of which require the SL feature).

I'll admit that I haven't had the chance to try out Lion yet, but I remember liking the samples I heard when it was about to be released. It's just that $24.99 was too good a deal to pass up when I remember liking what I heard and it being MPE capable, too...
