Thank you! , most entertaining bit (including the White Night, which I'm literally living the moment) of conversation for a long time in the Kvr. I like playing with words, not only instruments. Tried a fair few amp sims, and to my ears this is my favourite (I mainly prefer clean / mildly overdriven tones)

But these"boutique" developers seems often have minimal information of their products, I hate that.
After the download, the stand alone version installer appeared to my folder, as well as a separate .dll -file, without the plugin installer. No instruction, if the user is supposed to manually move the .dll to the DAW vst plugins folder.
I don´t want to "try" what happens, I love my DAW too much to do that. I have to know, before I install anaything.
The developer is either having a nap ,or is in the Sunday piquenique, now response. No FAQ of the DAW...
Questions:
1. Does the S-Gear2.exe install only the standalone version or the plugin version as well?
2.If I don´t want to install the standalone version, but only the plugin version, how to proceed?
3....movin the .dll to my DAW vst folder manually? Can the system be so primitive?
4. If you don´t have any installer for the .dll file, how does my DAW know where the application is located?

Every DLL file I've ever dealt with was self contained. They could be added or removed from the VST folder without harming anything, no installer or uninstaller was needed.

99 % of my 300+ installed plugins have included separate installer, which installs both the application and the vst, and tells to the vst, where the application add-ons, presets etc are located.Uncle E wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 6:03 pm Every DLL file I've ever dealt with was self contained. Only some very basic free plugins include nowdays only
manually dragged .dll-file.

Yeah, the only issue I've ever had is with .vst3 files that don't come with DLLs. Everything else you can normally get around install issues by putting the DLL in one of your VST folder locations. The only slight rider with that is very occasionally you also need ancillary files like licence files and the like.
There are still a few plugin retailers who use the DLL drag method for install, off the top of my head ChordPotion, Harvest (think they introduced an installer now) and all the Hornet plugins IIRC.

One exception to the rule is HorNet plugins (at least for Windows). You do need to move the files to the appropriate folder. You get a zip file with VST (32 bit and 64 bit), VST3 (32 bit and 64 bit), AAX (including a folder) all in the same directory (some of the older plugins might have less options).Harry_HH wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 6:11 pm99 % of my 300+ installed plugins have included separate installer, which installs borh the application and the vst, and tells to the vst, where the application add-ons, presets etc are located.Uncle E wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 6:03 pm Every DLL file I've ever dealt with was self contained. I reached out to Saverio@HoRNet to see if he would add an installer in the future, and he said it currently wasn't in the plan and that it would considerably increase the efforts, increase the price, which in the end, wouldn't change how the plugins themselves work, which I understand.
When I install a new PC or do a clean install of Windows, I usually unzip all my HoRNet plugins (I own 133), then search for each type (i.e. VST3 64 bit) based on the filename (i.e *._x64.vst3) then copy them in one fell swoop into the correct folder.

Yes, you're right and I'm in no way trying to defend or explain a company that does not provide a proper installer. My only point was that 100% of the DLL's I've used were self contained and could be moved around without harming my DAW and operating system.Harry_HH wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 6:11 pm 99 % of my 300+ installed plugins have included separate installer, which installs both the application and the vst, and tells to the vst, where the application add-ons, presets etc are located.

Really don’t understand the need for an installer in most cases as it asks you to browse to the plugin install path and drops a dll file there. Not sure how that’s preferable to browsing to the same folder in explorer or finder and just putting the file there.
Moving PC and you can then just clone your old PC’s plugin folder contents rather than have to run hundreds of separate installers.

How does your vst know where e. g. the app presets are located, if there are no installer creating the connection? In some cases you can teach that to the plugin afterwards, or enter the path to the plugin settings, but there is not always these options.WatchTheGuitar wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 8:09 pm Really don’t understand the need for an installer in most cases as it asks you to browse to the plugin install path and drops a dll file there. BTW, in this S-Gear - case it appeared, that the vst was supposed to install with the standalone installer, but the installer didn't ask the location, but used it own predefined location. I created a shortcut from that location to my DAW vst folder, and the case was solved.
But as I said earlier, I hate doing installations with limited information.
To Uncle E: "harm" can be defined a frustration of the user, as well, not always only harm done to the DAW - only quandary of what has happened, if something unwanted piece of software was installed and is filling at the moment space in your precious SSD, can be very harmul. It may ruin your day, drive you to deep depression for weeks, if not months.
The S-Gear plugin itself I don't hate, its great.

Well most presets are tiny so you could have a few hundred within the dll and let the user create a folder for their custom presets and set the path in the plugin preferences.Harry_HH wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 9:05 pmHow does your vst know where e. g. the app presets are located, if there are no installer creating the connection?WatchTheGuitar wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 8:09 pm Really don’t understand the need for an installer in most cases as it asks you to browse to the plugin install path and drops a dll file there. I think Tokyo Dawn also give you the option of handling your own dll files or an installer. They're a wonderful company though so it figures they've thought of customer service at that level.WatchTheGuitar wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 6:17 pm There are still a few plugin retailers who use the DLL drag method for install, off the top of my head ChordPotion, Harvest (think they introduced an installer now) and all the Hornet plugins IIRC.

Did iLok change their license transfers? I saw somewhere about them implementing a time delay or something, but I can't find it on their website. Something about how they'll require the license to be in your account for x amount of days?
