I actually like ilok (don't shoot me!) - its great to just download your software on whatever system you're in front of and be able to use it - no mucking about with aurthorisations or remembering codes, having the first page of the manual handy or anything....

I wouldn't mind the iLok if it was given as an OPTION. But some people just don't like it for obvious reasons.

Exactly. Let me tell a little story.

Last week, a networked server closed down just as I was opening my DAW and I promptly and automatically got my Waves Znoise de-authorized, since the iLok was apparently hosed for some unfathomable reason.

Just getting an RMA from Pace cost me 40 bucks, then shipping charged on top, and then my shipping costs on top of that. 60 dollars out the window, because of ridiculous fragility of an expensive C/P scheme. Of course my Steinberg/Korg Syncrosoft dongle was unaffected.

So, please, don't come waving the iLok idea in front of my eyes. :box:

Best,

Joey

I won't support any company who punishes their costumers like that.
So if Mackie would start using dongles I would stop buying and using Tracktion. It's as simple as that.

While I don't like the idea of copy protection at all, the one Tracktion uses is actually quite nice compared to many others. At least it doesn't get in your way after you've installed the key. And the license is available from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection.

I don't see Mackie changing the copy protection at any time in the even distant future. They have a good method right now that works. This method would worry me if it were some new company that could disappear at any time. But hey, it's Mackie, and they aren't going anywhere for a long time. So I'm glad they have it the way they do.

We don't use iLok. We don't use dongles. The authorization scheme will remain unchanged for Tracktion 3 and hasn't changed since Jules first introduced it years ago.

Windows Vista RC1 Support
Does this mean that there will be x64 support?

Post

Windows Vista isn't only 64 bit. It also comes at 32 bit. Also, you can run Tracktion already on a 64 bit processor. Not sure about 64 bit OS though, as I don't have one. I do have the processor and it works fine.

Yeah, but the question remains: is there an x64 build of T3? I would guess not, because there just aren't that many plugins that are x64. However, it's kind of a chicken-and-egg situation, so it wouldn't hurt to have a 64 bit Tracktion.

Tracktion works great on windows xp x64, but it's running in x86 mode.

Now with many of the plugin developers bringing out x64 versions of their plugins (izotope, voxengo, etc) it would be nice to try running things at 64 bit.

This isn't a big issue for me, as the performance gains aren't that dramatic, but if x64 support was there I would gladly make use of it.

As for vista, tracktion didn't work great for me on the beta, so I'm glad things will be fixed up for T3.

I'm looking forward to this update in general, to me it seems like some very practical features are being added.

Well, at least you can already do 64 bit across the mix bus. I do agree that full 64 bit support would be nice. But as you said, there just aren't enough plugs out there yet. So I don't see it as essential as dual core or anything at this moment. However, someone with a full 64 bit machine would probably disagree with me.

My thoughts exactly. It's not like I would be mad if it wasn't there, but it would be nice. The more hosts that have x64 support, the quicker the plugin developers will be forced to accommodate.

I wouldn't call it essential either. In fact, I don't care either way. I'm just pointing out that it's yet another question that Beno can answer. :P

Returning to the subject of the Elastique timestretch algorithm and for those who 'do give a $£&k' I can confirm the following:

The Elastique algorithm in Ableton Live 6.01 and therefore T3, is the 'complex' option in Live 6.01 This is used for mixed music or whole tracks. Ableton Live does use other algorithms for other types of sounds. I expect T3 will too.

This was confirmed by email from Z-Plane.

BTW I have heard the Izotope Radius algorithm and compared it with Elastique. Subjectively speaking, Izotope is better, but not that much better. The fast transients of cymbals etc are cleaner but this is only so noticable with larger stretches.
I shall be very happy with Elastique and REX support.
