Everyone – thank you for your comments in this thread and others – I really have not slept properly since the ‘incident’ so now a bit groggy and my patience really slipped and I don’t think I can take another ‘incident’ like it – not to this extent –too risky – this is a whole dedicated server that was made irreparable.
I am pretty close to restoring the backups ( I do backups every day on every server) I will see just how much can be restored and will bring the auditorium up – but – it will be closed until I have decided for sure ‘after some sleep’ what to do about it – it clearly has a good support – I have been given a few suggestions as to what could be done to cut down on the amount of attacks it gets – I will just see if I feel brave to try it again – I just don’t know right this moment.
I feel disgusted by a certain element of the internet and it has pushed my patience to this point you see today.
But this thread is a strong counterbalance to that I can assure you – thank you
I will get back to you.
Best regards,
Peter

Well - I was allways wondering for how long such a great and generous free service such as the Auditorium could stay up.
Not that it'd be the same reason as for the other formerly free web services to go down, but I guess there's allways some weird people spoiling the fun.
Personally, I just thought it was a great idea to have a space for sharing some stuff.
I mean, I've only been using the Auditorium (or my way less than mediocre site) for some sampler patches I put some work in. I didn't think I should pay some money to give something probably useful away for free.
But then, why should Peter?
Anyways, if you need some help in form of a donation or whatever, just let me know and I'll see what I'd be able to do.
I just love the idea of certain parts of the internet still being "free" and wouldn't mind to contribute in whichever way.

I have also gotten an abnormally high number of attacks on my firewall this last week. And hello by the way kwac. So many people have different names here. Guess I'll have to start learning you all again.

I love the Auditorium too. I recommend the soundsfonts in the Auditorium, especially the ultimate guitar kit.

Peter:
The auditorium is a great service to the community and what you've done has been exceptionally generous. You brought a lot of people together around their music. Thanks for your contribution.
I just can't understand the hacker mentality. I don't understand how anyone could think it's ok to destroy something that does absolutely no harm and brings a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people.
Best wishes in whatever comes next.

Cool, another One song. Nice and floaty. Suitably down beat for the occaision. I like your attitude One. We must find a way to keep the Auditorium going. It was home.

Well, I really hope the auditorium can come back and stay. It's probably the sanest, most useful, vital and truly gregarious site/community I've found on the web. Peter is a large part of that, as are the other excellent and engaged moderators. I haven't even seen the rants and flames there that KVR is prone to suffer (even if I find them reasonably under control here). Between the auditorium and KVR I've had 10 months of the best online experiences. I hardly go anywhere else online.
This kind of outrage (anyone even thinking of f**king up the auditorium) is one of the few things that brings out the violent revenge fantasies in me. It's guaranteed that whoever does things like this also believes that all music and software . . . no doubt everything else in this world that people put care and effort into . . . should be given to them for free. It goes way beyond mean spiritedness, or even mischievious mayhem; it's complete ingratitude, ignorance and a total lack of empathy and understanding--it's f**king evil. Spitting in the face of someone like Peter who provides such incredible services for free, and for no other reason than he's wants to help a bunch of strangers whose art dwells outside the corporate profit-driven system.
Yeah, it pisses me off.
