tracktion mixer

do me a favor. open tracktion. look at the screen. look up in the top right corner of tracktion. see the "racks" button? press and press again. see that box opening up? good! imagine a second button beside the "racks" button. this button would open the same window, but it would contain a little mixer of some kind.

Actually this is a great idea. A number of people have posted "mixer" rack configurations, but they always seem a little cluttered and clunky. If Tracktion included a svelt, prebuilt mixer rack, this would placate the mixer fiends but not offend the Tracktion purists.

Lee-- don't forget you can make submixes in Tracktion, too... 24 tracks should be a breeze to keep track of even without them, but WITH submixes... I can't imagine it being much of a sweat.

I think I've had a vision of the Tracktion mixer and it's something that would be useful to everyone not just a few people. I have to iron out a few details of how it would work but if I get time I'll post a mockup...

and right below Diapason, there is a template for Tracktion which has a routing example and a rack setup to use it. I have not experimented enough to have an opinion about it though.
I think T3 made a valid point about turning his monitor 90 degrees. Maybe a button that allowed for a vertical view would make it more like a mixer, but this would of course lead to debates about whether the cursor should travel upwards or downwards A 90 degree turn in thought process might yield the same results!

Not that I'm advocating a mixer, but: since Western readers go left-to-right and then also top-to-bottom, a 90 degree turn would be most comfortable if the cursor went DOWN rather than up.

Tracktion offers a choice, and that's what makes it special.

I feel no need for a mixer in Tracktion. And I agree with those who said they want to see the resources allocated elsewhere.

the value of a vertical mixer is that monitors are wider than tall. my apple wide display could show many more tracks without scrolling if they were arranged vertically rather than horizontally.

This is not an issue for me, but perhaps it would be for someone.

I do sometimes find Tracktion visually confusing when I have a bunch of filters on a track and the vol/pan filter has become so small. I might like to see a button that hides all filters except volume/pan, and which sets them all to a customizable fixed size. This would make it easier to see them at a glance, and edit them. It could be called mix mode button... maybe it could activate the big meters too.

Lockable filter size would help a lot with any confusion. Especially lockable vol/pan filter and meters.

You pretty much nailed the reasons a mixer is desirable to me: everything is viewable in one place, although I can live without it (and do!). Even a 'big meter view' for outputs would be cool.
A suggestion to get around the visual confusion you mentioned might be to route those tracks to empty tracks at the top with only meters and which could be easily resized together with a right mouse button drag.

Well actually the Tracktion way is where EVERYTHING is viewable in one place, meaning arrangement, mixing, and routing. Its all infront of your face. A mixer would hide part of that.

The whole "one screen" thing works untill your project get beyond a certian size. I guess if I had a 30 inch flat screen things would fit into one window a whole lot better.

And if Tracktion "is" a mixer it's a very badly labeled one. Another thing I really miss from Sonar is that when you expand the view of a track there is a level scale. Having one right on the left side of the track view made it so much easier to see where levels were peaking and such. Same with a mixer view. I like being able to look at where all my output levels are at without having to click on each individual meter filter.
