The zoom is my favorate....right click and drag, makes zooming in and out real quick.

I thought that IIRs post (6 posts back) showed how to make a multi-out version of BFD with a single click?

what do you mean by setup a channel every time?

I cannot find the "manage presets->add to list of presets." button. I click on the rack and instrument panel appears. But no manage presets.

Click inside an open rack and you should see it at the bottom, like this

I too come from tracking background, but I couldn't make heads or tails of ReViSiT when I tried it. In hindsight I am fairly certain it was a really old version though.

So basically it works like you'd think -- as an input for midi and you put it before your VSTi (in tracktion) so that input gets routed from Revisit to the synth ?

Revisit -> Synth -> Output?

I have high hopes for tracking still being useful. I have to admit I prefer it over piano roll as well. Renoise rules too.

There is no way you can make a multi out version of BFD with a single click in Tracktion. Tracktion has to have you tell it for each channel (32) how it is routed..for instance Overheads are in stereo, snare in mono..etc..and this info will not transfer over in a template either. You will have to set it up each time.

I can have this inserted on a track with about 4 clicks altogether.. thats not just the channels set up as I want them, but EQ & compression too. This is vastly more efficient than Cubase / Sonar etc IMO.

You have tried racks?

Damn. I thought I'd missing something in the incredibly-awkward-to-get-around Sonar and loaded up both hosts, only to find that the "right click mouse zoom" is in Tracktion instead. Too bad. And figures.

stash, you've missed a huge part of the point of racks.

What astonishes me in any forum (not just for Tracktion) is the sheer number of people who try to do something one way and then say with complete conviction, "It can't be done," thereby disseminating false information.

I don't mean to sound dense here, but...

IIR's answer is to treat the rack as (say) eight tracks for something like DR008, with the comps and all, then just set that as a stereo out? :dog: I'm stupid.

See, I was like stash98--hook all eight (or whatever) outs to different tracks! That takes forever and is discouraging.

So, is this what I'm seeing here? Any downsides to IIR's method?

I did try racks, but I use 32 channels in BFD and different EQs and comps on each one...I prefer going channel by channel for that specific reason. What it looks like in that rack is the compressors are being used on grouped channels..I do not mix that way, I want each output hitting it's own channel..So ill say again, the speed of Cubase for ME is MUCH more efficient..I never said it couldn't be done. I just said it was a much bigger pain. All the routing is done automatically in cubase, and the channels are also all labeled for you(T does not do this).
My impulse reverb lagged. It looks like tis rack is using SIR (im hoping w/out lag), but I never got it to work. In cubase I simply put the IR in an FX channel and PDC takes care of it (that's one click).

Loading a template in cubase: It's one click for BFD Ultra Completely setup, that includes EQ/compression..any thing I want..So there is no possible way that T is "vastly better" at setting up a BFD template then Cubase.

Once again, for what I do..(lots of MIDI, a few live instruments + vocals) Cubase is much faster and more efficient. It's really not an argument for me, because I own Tracktion, continue to reccomend it to others and have tried the exact same workflows on BOTH sequencers.

PS. I said no way a 1 click setup. IIRs sighs and then shows a 4 click setup that's not even near how I use BFD. So I have not spread any false info at all.

Communication is never perfect. It sure SEEMED like you were saying that you simply "cannot" do a quick setup of multi-out BFD. Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but such is the nature of communication. I'll grant you that T won't do it your way, so that's fair enough. But to point out the "4 clicks" instead of one is really pedantic. :hihi:

Frankly (and I'm only being this blunt and honest because it's late) it's frickin' retarded to comp and EQ 32 different outs of a BFD or any other drum instrument for that matter.

Motown got by with 2 overhead mics on a drum kit. That doesn't mean you should have to do that, too (and I wouldn't), but surely 8 outs is enough? And why on earth do you need to treat each out so preciously? Multiband comp and "global" EQ are your friends. How on earth can you have FUN when you're paying so much attention to 32 outs of one lousy instrument in the whole song?

I think people make their own lives unecessarily complicated, and although I'm probably the only one who's going to say it publicly and therefore take all the heat for it, I bet there are other people out there thinking the exact same thing.

uhmm..

I work in music for a living. I spend 5 days a week at a studio that does major and indie label albums. I learned to mix drums here on an SSL board. This is how I mix to get drums sounding how I want them to sound. You can laugh or question, but most rock records coming out right now have INCREDIBLE detail being paid to the drums. BFD is a wonderful program because you can treat it like a real kit. I don't consider the drums to be "1 lousy instrument", but instead the foundation of a song. A great producer spends years mastering his technique for mixing and tracking drums. I guess you would consider this "retarded"

Motown is wonderful music, but I don't make it. If you really don't understand why someone would spend so much time on a drum kit, or why 8 outs isn't enough..then I have to question why you are on a music production forum giving advice or critiques.

My life is not unnecessarily complicated. I have learned my drum techniques from some incredible producers who make great records.

I brought up why I prefer Cubase not to bash tracktion, but just to add my input. I have owned Tracktion for a year, and I still use it when I need to.

<shrug> I can understand the need for "retaliation" when I may have seemed like I was calling you a retard, (and heck, maybe I was) but that just doesn't make sense.

Not to mention that we're not even ON a music production forum. ;)

Obviously what I wrote was just an opinion and you've presented a valid counter-example. It just gets tiring to try to be a gentleman about it all the time and preface everything with, "Well, it's all about serving music" or other such diplomatic tactics, when what I'm really thinking is, "What an effing waste of time to set up 32 tracks for the outs of a BFD."

That's the way I see things, and I'm willing to bet that regardless of the fancy-pants engineers and producers you may know, there are MANY other producers who have made millions of records, who would say the same thing. Frig, man, I'd LOVE to see exactly what you're doing with each of those 32 tracks, but I admit that part of my motivation would be to dissect the whole thing partly in an effort to prove my own point. ;) I say that because it'd be a real waste of your time to actually show me (despite my very genuine curiousity) and then have me turn around and throw it all back in your face. And I don't mean that I'd be right or that you'd be wrong, I just mean that I know myself and I know I wouldn't be able to just say "thanks, dude!" if I happen to see craziness just staring at me.
