It depends on how picky you are, but pretty much any virtual analog plugin or hardware synth sounds more or less like a Virus, especially when comparing to the C and earlier which don't have the new oscillator models of the TI. All synths have different characters and personalities, but it's still subtractive synthesis so it's going to produce essentially the same types of noises.bulvanskägg wrote:Is there ANY synth that, in your opinion, doesn't sound like the Virus?sysscan wrote:ElectraX

Thanks! I like Predator, but they're totally different machines. Sound wise, Albino doesn't go as deep as Predator does nor are the filters as aggressive. What I was saying in my articles about the Virus C is that it's easy to nail sounds like Boards Of Canada and Tangerine Dream and I think Rob really brings that quality to Albino. Obviously though, you can use it for dance, r&b, hip hop and anything else if you want to too.Very nice article indeed. Which makes me wonder - if he compares the Albino to the Virus, how he thinks about Predator? I always thought Predator and Albino where pretty alike, no?
Predator, to me, is reminiscent, sound wise, of a digital VA or ROMpling VA. That in itself is not a bad thing. It has much the same digital warmth, if you will, of my E-MU Xl-1, which I love the hell out of. It's also interesting to me that you have this extensive selection of waves in the oscillator section and then by comparison, a relatively simple filter section. However, if you make good use of the pre-filter distortion (which is also featured on the Nord Lead) and the filter envelope with all those waves, you can make some really interesting and aggressive sounds.
Hey, no problem, those are excellent sounds! In fact that's how I found your page, via a discussion on Virus like VSTs. I have to agree with you, Massive is an excellent choice for Virus sounds.Im flattered that I am mentioned in the article![]()

As someone just knowing Albino on the paper, but knowing how intense the oscillator section is in there and in Predator, I just thought that the main concept behind both is the same. Since it was the last project Rob did for Linplug. I guessed that some of the same waves must be in both synthesizers and Predator is just an easier version.

Right, people seem to think that since he left Albino on LinPlug that Predator was the next version or something.
Albino is still available from LinPlug if you want to try out the demo. I've never really sat down and compared the waves between the two, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were more or less the same. Although they may not be at the same time if there's licensing issues involved.

Exactly. Waves actually seems to be very alike. Maybe there was a deal in terms of licensing, since Albino can be purchased from both, Linplug and Rob Papen, also you will find terms like "ECS" on both synthesizer.

Just to be clear, for other readers, Albino is only available from Linplug. Rob's site redirects to LinPlug.emotica wrote:Exactly. Waves actually seems to be very alike. But in terms of licensing, sometimes developers license their waveforms from third parties. For example, recently ReFx just replaced the waves in Vanguard with ones licensed from Tone2.
If they were Rob's, he more than likely licensed them to LinPlug for Albino3 and may have reused them in Predator, since they were his to being with. Which I also suspect Albino was developed by LinPlug in association with Rob rather than the other way around, which is why it's still under LinPlug.
I'm just guessing here, but you can see how quickly it becomes complicated when people subcontract various parts of their synths. In the end though, oscillator waves are only one part of the equation in determining a synths overall character and it's not as easy as just comparing them by their waves.
But if you like them that much, download the demo and give it a try. You may enjoy a different spin on them.

Viper is incredibly close to the Virus sound - can't wait to see what Adam ads to it.chk071 wrote:Adam Szabo's Viper.
