Code: Select all

IrionDaRonin - Beautiful Electronic Creature 5pts
Doc Jon - Iona Sunrise 4pts

FYI this month's u-he patch contest is Zebralette, so anyone who has any home baked patches left over from OSC and fancies another go at winning Zebra (or any other u-he software product) might want to have a look here: Zebralette Patch Contest#2

Post

Damn, I forgot it was the 15th already!
So I hope I'm not too late and I'll do it quick and simple:
  1. Doc Jon - Iona Sunrise (5pts)
Immediately knew this would be my 5 points this month, somehow... just too picture-creatingly awesome in my mind :D
  2. Ancient - Ice Cream Summer
    Beautiful :)
  3. 4lb Kitty - Alone
Weird, but also very mid-stimulating, awesome.
  4. bzur - drunkZebra
Just extremely fun to listen to ;)
  5. Irion Da Ronin - Asian Passion (1pt)
Some really nice elements and... it's an Irion track :) (that does mean quite something ;) )
Sorry for the ugly layout and the short "comments", but I really hurried right now ;)

[edit: at least made my list a proper bbcode-list now]

Great music! I've really loved listening to all these tracks. Very inspiring stuff! Had a tough time narrowing them down but here are my top five:

Doc Jon - Iona Sunrise - 5 points
ville - Precog Dreamer - 4 points
Bzur - Drunk Zebra - 3 points
Ancient - Ice Cream Summer - 2 points
JoeCat - Chasing Mrs. Peel - 1 point

Post

Heyhey, here's my top 5:

ville - Precog Dreamer - 5 points

I think every other entry has something that gives them away as being made with one synth except this one. The drums are reaaaally believeable (best snare award), and all instruments sound like they were picked for the song.

bzur - Virgo's eyes - 4 points

Great percussion sets this one apart from the other atmospheric kinda entries I think, good progression as well.

Yeager - Zebraskie Point - 3 points

I like the last bit the best, quality production all around though. Love the bells.

IrionDaRonin - Beautiful Electronic Creature - 2 points

Nifty bass, and cool things going on with the snare type thingy.

Doc Jon - Iona Sunrise - 1 points

Really impressively crafted sounds, guitar in particular.

Ancient - Ice Cream Summer - Absolutely fantastic. I love each and every part of this track.
Bzur - Virgo's Eye - This track touched my heart.
Irion - Asian Passion - Wonderful sounds and composition.
Doc Jon - Iona Sunrise - Created an excellent atmosphere where you can literally visualize the dolphins, etc. Kudos.
z.prime - I, you - Sounds pretty professional. Like the arrangement. Nice track.

too many good tracks this time, very hard to pick only five. I enjoyed all other tracks at some level or other. May the best track win. Good luck to you all contestants.

1 - Flumba - GrumpyBot Grows Wings - 5 points
Epic boost. Gritty basslines. Videogamish soundtrack. Very energic!! Just what i needed it.
Tip for next compositions: Try to make more variations at intros and beginnings, in case you are going to make it slow.
Cheers for the track.

2 - Van Morrison - All my love - 4 Points
Amazing pads, warm atmosphere, beautiful chord changes. Feeling factor.
Tip for next compositions: Percussion, i missed some. Ambient doesn't means lack of percs.
Cheers for the track, man.

3 - Z.Prime - I, you - 3 Points
Happy melodies and a very amazing chord, i really love it!
And also with a nostalgic part from the middle, bipolar track like i usually call them. Makes me think about my past too. Feeling factor.
Tip for next compositions: Try to do the transitions between parts more softly. Changes are good, but not suddently.
Cheers for the track.

4 - Bzur - Virgo's Eyes - 2 Points
Amazing composition, nice textures and that melody. I got feelings with it. Tip for next compositions: Try to make the sounds more characteristic and notorious, we got a talk about this some days ago on facebook.
Cheers for the track.

5 - Andjac1963 - Savannah Gold - 1 Point
Nice C64 videogame melody arps. And nice percussion too. Tip for next compositions: Be careful with the repetitive factor.
Cheers for the track.

Honourable mentions
Without any special order.

Evo2slo - Earn Your Stripes
Powerful percussion and very well made. Aggressive like a tiger.

Evo2Slo - Zebralove
Relaxing track, perfect for a role playing game.

Ancient - Ice Cream Summer
Happy melodies, and nice ambient textures.

Gorgorgath - Android Holyday
Love the composition, the use of sounds and specially the bassline.
Mr. Nutson is getting bigger in time.

Doc Jon - Iona Sunrise
Atmospheric and evocative. Love whales breath and theremin.

Satyatunes - Aurora
Nice mix and arrange, as usually. Nice chorish sounds!

Yeager - Zebraskie Point
Quality sounds and specially the drumkits part. Sticky melody.

Akson - Free canned Sardines
Two step. Minimalistic song. I love the sub bass.
I got prepared my votes two days ago, but i was very busy making other tracks, betatesting a secret synth and visiting the family. Thanks God i could take some time now.

To the rest of contestants, well, if you didn't got any points by me doesn't means that you are bad or something like that. Keep making music, keep encouraging yourselves and keep learning (as i do too) Good luck in musical life. All of you have potential. Be constant.

Thanks everybody for participate on this month.
Thanks for the prize donators.
And also thanks to V'ger for the great effort of making this every month, and making better (and more pro :hihi: ) the OSC site this month.

You all are making this reality every month.

Have a good day, guys :)

@Ruedirena: I liked your Heqman Jah track. It was in my honorable list. If we had a prize for "most FX sounds used" then you will be the clear winner and I mean it in a very positive way. Don't be frustrated, with 41 tracks in the fray, it's not unusual some tracks will get less attention.

Post

Yesterday there were still 10 tracks on my short-list. Nostalgia for playing console games with my kids may have played a role in my final selection; a more serious mood would have earned top spots for Irion's tracks, dancing shoes would have moved points to Ruedirena's Heqmanjah, etc. Looks like we are all over the map…

Everything was well-produced, lots of original sounds, etc. With 41 tracks I'll spare comments on all and won't single out all the honorable mentions (rather than leave to inference those tracks that did not make the cut). If you care what I think about a particular track (why, lol?), feel free to PM me...

I tried to be objective about "completeness" - there were some great ideas that were maybe not fleshed out. I think that's more a time constraint - different schedules and workflows (my workflow is awful!), and good tracks need time to "gel". OSC favors the ability to get a complete production out quickly. The tracks I picked, while not necessarily the "biggest" or longest, sounded (to me) like they were whole in some way. (The Beatle's "Yesterday" is 2:03)

Ancient-IceCreamSummer - 5
Perfectly named for the mood it invokes, this song met all the standard criteria (solid production, choice of sounds, completeness). But in the end, it earned top spot 'cause it's the song I woke up hearing in my head the most…

PrecogDreamer - 4
Urban-spacey? Don't know how you describe this, but there's no denying the epic sounds and beat. What bumped it up was the awesome chord changes around the 1 minute mark, and the perfect little breakdown soon after. This one played in my head also...

Akson-FreeCannedSardines - 3
HA! My thumbs started twitching for power-ups. I love when it "goes underground" at the 1:00 mark. All it needs is a boss fight. One point for the last note…

DocJon-IonaSunrise - 2
The award for best sound design, and another great mood-setter. Love the way it evolves from ambience into a short song (with "guitar!"). I could not have come up with this.

Flumba-Grumpy-botAccidentallyGrowsWings - 1
I didn't initially warm to this, but respected the effort - lots of stuff going on at a high bpm is hard to pull off. This is a track where the name matters. If I had to hire someone to write a theme or music to a game/film, and told him "Grumpy-bot Accidentally Grows Wings", this is exactly what I'd hope to hear!

Much, much respect to all, and good luck! :hail: :D

I have a theory about why people like music - as humans, we are creatures of habit. This translates to the habit of listening to music, too. We typically listen to certain styles of music, maybe with our tastes evolving or changing over time. When we listen to music, especially music within the same genre, there are usually similar characteristics (that's sorta what defines a genre, right?) be it heavy guitars, deep bass, thumping beats, particular lyrical styles, or something else. These characteristics end up being the things we are listening for and how we gauge music.

For example, someone who listens to country music is likely to be listening to the country singer, some of the guitar and the overall feel of the music. If you played the most popular pop song to a die-hard country fan, it's quite possible they wouldn't like it because it doesn't have the elements that they consider make good songs.

Having said this, the styles of electronic music are so varied that the same holds true; we see this with the trance sorts of music being so prevalent - those who love it are listening for 'that big lead line' and vocals these days, with some amount of variation in uniqueness between tracks.

Regarding the lack of votes, I would offer this as a likely reason: the styles of music produced for this month's competition, although varied, have some common elements that the producers of the tracks felt made them good enough to enter. A lot of melodic sort of stuff was submitted, followed by some bass-heavy and sequenced sort of stuff. It's likely the people who produced those tracks are 'listening for similar elements', which your tracks didn't have.

I, personally, listen to a variety of music electronic and otherwise and like to think I appreciate a lot of music for what it is. If I were to offer some constructive criticism, I would suggest first, don't take a lack of votes to mean your music is any worse than anyone else's, just remember that people vote for what they know. To me, specifically, your tracks were styles that I am not most appealed to. Improvements I would suggest: one of the tracks sounded "ultramaximized" (a.k.a. boosted to extreme with a limiter), which is a pretty big turn-off to me. Still my own personal listening habits, I enjoy melodies throughout, which didn't particularly strike a chord with me on either of the tunes. The other aspects: I felt some of the other tunes had a better assortment of percussion sounds and more appealing mixing. Please don't take any of that the wrong way; I enjoyed the uniqueness of both tracks, and especially the creepy feel of the Night of the Living Zebra. I also think that some of the sounds on both of the tracks were very good and especially unique; I particularly loved the drop-down tape-stop sort of thing, it's just not enough to push a tune above some other very good compositions.

In sort: don't make music to win a competition, make music that you love.

Did you submitted any entry to the contest?
The track Constant Theory is by him (Doomedman aka Marsar ) :)
Thanks mate, 41 entries are too many to have a proper registry about who is in and who not.

Have a good day and sorry Doomedman ;)
Yes, it's me ;)

no problem Irion, my old monicker (doomedman) doesn't represent me anymore in my composition.
This may cause a bit of confusion and I'm sorry for this.

Thanks for the comments/votes !
