... who now is the lead developer of Bitwig. ;)

Anyway, i really can't see how this applies here. Claes decided that he will never work again on Surge, so he open source'd it. Fair enough. Cakewalk obviously sees it different for their products. And, who knows, maybe we WILL see a new Z3TA or Rapture one day.

It's always easy to say as well. You never know who owns the rights to the software anyway. Maybe it's not even Cakewalk's last word on those plugins.

You never know what will happen, but I can only assume that open source would be the best hope for these legacy synths. Commercially they would probably not sell enough product into a potentially tiny market to fund ongoing development and support.

Just look at all the new synths and plugins being released for single digit (or maybe low 2 digit) prices these days.

Cakewalk isn't 'commercial', it is funded by a
a very successful family, and costs the user time,
but not money. It's userbase may help
bring people to the separate Bandlab venture,
but i think there is room to improve that effort,
including a bring-back of high quality legacy products.

Also, I'm impressed by the Cakewalk/Bandlab
support people, there is a lot of energy being put
to good use!
Cheers

I don't know what your definition of "commercial" is but... the devs surely get paid for their work.

There are many ppl who work for charities and get paid ...

but charities are not "commercial"

Post

Yeah, but Bandlab is really no charity. ;)

For the sake of discussion, Reaper and Cubase and Ableton
are commercial, you buy your license. Cakewalk is not even
for sale anywhere. I get the impression the family funding
Cakewalk really like music, don't mind sharing their wealth
to facilitate music producers, and if Bandlab makes some money,
some of it will be reinvested in more and better music tools,
so that even more music is created. If Bandlab doesn't turn a profit,
it's no different than a passionate golfer or fisherman or car fanatic
'losing money' doing what is greatly enjoyed.

Bitwig's treatment of the Surge synthesizer is a good example
of old code benefitting new users 8)
I have never heard of Bitwig having anything to do with Surge. As far as I can tell the Surge synth was open sourced by it's former developers at Vember Audio.
Who, I believe works for (or is a partner) in bitwig... ;)
Not everyone has gone on the pub-crawl in Berlin, it seems

For the sake of clarity, the owner of BandLab has only committed to keeping the Cakewalk DAW free.

He has also commented that BandLab acquired all of the former intellectual capital of Cakewalk.

So the assumption is that for anything else Cakewalk related that they might choose to re-release someday, such as instruments or other plugins, those would be commercial. However the DAW would always remain free, as a step up to a full DAW for their online BandLab users, or additionally for anyone who wishes to use it.

Speaking of which, Palindrome from Glitchmachines was (is?)
$10 earlier today, at www.pluginboutque.com
so I clicked the bait :hihi:

Lets you load 4 samples, and morph them in
simple yet abundant ways, drawing paths,
setting speed, choosing playback direction, add basic effects.
etc Should be great fun with your favorite samples.
And they supply a gig+ to get things rolling.

(It's black friday, nothing is off topic, and I mean
$ n-o-t-h-i-n-g $ )

If this is the one and only Rene Caballos....

We miss you and we need your inspired genius

The synths you created are classics and updated versions would be something special..

Along with SFZ and all that other jazz :tu:

I believe that Rene transferred ownership of his company rgc:audio to the old Cakewalk company, and joined their development team. After he left Cakewalk, they proceeded to release a couple of updated synths based on his designs. So that implies that Cakewalk owned the former intellectual property of Rene and rgc:audio.

Since the former Cakewalk company's assets were purchased by BandLab Technologies in 2018, BL probably now owns all of the software based on Rene's designs. No word from BL when, if ever, they will release anything other than the DAW software.

If the software licenses had been open sourced, Rene or anybody could fork them and move on. But sadly that is not the case here. :(
