The best thing Bitwig can do to stop this happening to anyone else is to remove the "auto renew" tick box.
We keep getting told that the licence is not a subscription service so why was it there in the first place ?

If you can't cancel auto renewal from your account they shouldn't have it there at all.antic604 wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 1:11 amCome the f**k on! I went to 2co.com, went to Support/Tracking number via the top bar, filled in my order number and email address and they sent the email right away to change/setup my password. From there it was easy to click on the products (I had made more than one purchase through them) and see the Bitwig purchase. It was not set to Auto Renew. As always, ymmv...

I'm ok with the functionality staying at 2CO but I would like to have an indicator at my account on Bitwig's site stating my Auto-Renew status and also a link to 2CO where a change can be made. I don't think that is asking too much.Greenstorm33 wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 2:46 amIf you can't cancel auto renewal from your account they shouldn't have it there at all.antic604 wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 1:11 amCome the f**k on! That would definitely be helpful, and I can understand the OP’s frustration at not realizing this purchase would happen at a time that he lost his job - a large unexpected purchase might make the difference between being able to put food on the table or not.UncleAge wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 3:36 am I'm ok with the functionality staying at 2CO but I would like to have an indicator at my account on Bitwig's site stating my Auto-Renew status and also a link to 2CO where a change can be made. Bitwig is a German company, and depending on how well they communicate auto-renewal (or not), they are open for litigation. Not being able to see from your account that you might have auto-renewal is on puts Bitwig in a very vulnerable spot, because a German court might very well see this as a "hidden subscription", there have been enough cases like this in the past that lead to a law requiring "buy buttons" to exactly state what you are agreeing to, e.g. "Pay purchase" or "Subscribe to this service". So no, it's not about taking responsibility, it's about Bitwig walking a very fine legal line here.antic604 wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 1:11 am Come the f**k on! That's a rethoric question, right?
It doesn't NEED it, but Bitwig's licensing model JUSTIFIES such a tick box to exist as an OPTION. Now whether you want to use it or not, is entirely dependant on your needs and preferences. That's called a "choice".
And for the n-th time: I agree it should be visible in our accounts whether we opted in for the auto-renewal with an option to on/off. Bitwig f**ked up here, even though their ass might be covered from the legal stand point. But it still doesn't release anyone from the obligation to pay attention to what they're clicking and understanding what they sign up for when they do.
I wonder how old OP is, because I've seen this with my teenager kids - they'd go through websites or app installs clicking all the "Ok", "Next", "Agree" without as much as reading the pop ups. They'd set up accounts on weird websites not bothering to remember the password, etc. It required a lot of guidance & work on my part to slowly get them to pay attention to those things, consider their safety and privacy, etc.
So yeah, my blood boils when I read attacks and baseless assumptions that a company tries to f**k someone over and that there should be numerous safety measures introduced to protect that person from making stupid, reckless choices that might hurt them. Sure, there were, are and will be cases when some companies do that with premeditation and malicious intent, actually factoring in the costs of penalties or legal actions in their business model. But you can't assume that for every company, especially small ones that are operating in a highly competitive niche market and where they live or die on their reputation, quality of customer service, etc. How about assuming it's an honest mistake? Or technical difficulty to link APIs between company and payment processor? No. They "stole" his money and didn't come back to him immediately during Easter holidays because thieves wouldn't do that. That is somehow a better explanation
And lastly, if you don't like the OPTION to use Bitwig's license model as a subscription then don't use it! Or don't use Bitwig altogether! No one forces you to do anything here.

In the context of Bitwig's model, having auto-renew makes very little sense. It's not a subscription and it's not like Pro Tools where a gap means you lose rights to re-sub at the same rate.antic604 wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 1:11 amCome the f**k on! For Bitwig, having continuous coverage is unnecessary for 99% of users. You don't lose anything by having the update plan run out unless there's an update you want that very day. In which case, you just head to the shop and buy a new plan. And if Bitwig is not sending out at least one reminder of auto-renew being active, that's far from good practice.
I'm sure someone in marketing thought "let's have this and rely on inertia to maintain an income stream" but it reflects poorly on the company.
