You can try it with the free version. You should be able to read those sounds in your ST2. But, I don't know if the free version can browse beyond the SSInstruments folder. Probably it can but I haven't done it yet. Try it. Of course, the free version won't read any other sounds except the ones you can download for it. Even the full version will only read its own sounds. One of the benefits of ST2 is that it will be able to read ALL ST format sounds as well as import other formats.progfusion74 wrote:So for someone like me who already has ST2, would I add the SS2 sounds into the ST2 sounds directory as a separate folder, much like any other ST format sound? That way I can use the SS2 sounds with either interface. Can I try this with the SS2 Free sounds?

It works. In other words, I am now using the SS2 Free sounds and presets from ST2. I just moved the sounds to my ST libraries folder and the presets to the ST2 folder with my other combis. I also point SS2 Free to the SS2 sounds folder under the ST sounds folder, and that works. Only thing that I have to duplicate is the combins. SS2 Free combis have to be in the SS2 Presets folder.Squids wrote:You can try it with the free version. You should be able to read those sounds in your ST2. The only thing I seem to miss using the SS2 Free sounds in ST2 is the cute pictures, but I might have just tried the wrong patches
I'll try and rustle up a good prog rock tune this weekend

Ok...finally got around to loading it up. Registration was no problem, and it works great in Live 4.0 and Cubase. Gorgeous sounds and creating new combis is a breeze.
It's definitely a load on my G4/800, but lowering polyphony helps. I kind of wish there was a "global poly" somewhere so I could lower all the instrument poly settings at one time, but that's a very minor detail. (And maybe there is and I just missed it.)
Anyway, great instrument...worth the wait...thanks!

guys - don't forget the filter and the effects
I've had great fun taking the supplied presets and messing with the filter , whilst applying guitar amp sim effects and spacious echoes.
When you take that stuff into account , SS2Free is much more than a Rompler. It's more like a synth whose basic waveforms are multisampled moogs and oberheims
fantastic fun - extremely useful and buckshee

That sounds like some kind of really gross tasting gourmet cheese only a fat lady in Barcelona would consider palattable..
ST & SS free are pretty nifty, though..no jack intended

I just downloaded the sounds and checked them out in ST2.
Damn, these are nice sounds! I can see how this will be a hit with synth lovers! I think it'll be really important to get the word out that these aren't just presets (though the presets sound great!), but like scuzzphut pointed out - there are a pile of great effects to use too!
Ok, I think when I get some time I'll do some demos of just SS2FREE and ST2FREE combined. I reckon I could put together a whole Chemical Brothers album just with those two!
Forever,
Kim.

Yes, and we'll get into some fun patch sharing even for the free version to just get people using it regardless if they thought they would buy the full version or not. This way, perhaps some people will get "hooked" and buy the full version at some point. It is a cool way of doing things in my opinion. I believe in giving to get back. I am glad you guys can see that this free version really is a powerful synth itself. I have quite a few more samples coded for it that will be released over time (and of course, usable as sounds for ST2 as well) and those will be free too. So tell yer friends!
Prog, if you want to see the pictures of the synths inside ST2 as well just copy and paste all of the .bmp image files that are WITH the sti, sth, stw in SS2 FREE into the STImages folder within your SampleTank folder. Then they should show up in ST2 GUI as well.
Enjoy!
Anyone who seriously wants to make some user demos can contact me and if you make a good one with the current sounds I will give you some of the other sounds in advance to make more demos with. It'd be fun! Koorby has some of them already so... look out!

So, this 'free' synth requires me to register it, even tho you have my details from the last 'free' instrument?
I guess i can expect a lot of spam if i chose to DL it...

Actually, all IK products have to be registered as you know. But, of course it is completely optional to use it or not. Registering it in this case puts you into a drawing for a few lucky people who will win the full version and those that register it will also be informed of more free sounds for it which I would think you'd want. Sometimes emails are sent only to specific users and product registration is a way to manage that.
It's worth it Dave. Your info isn't shared anywhere and you can always opt to NOT receive the newsletter after the first one arrives. But, they are not that frequent and they could have info you'd like to know about anyway so... up to you!
Hey, if you want to just use it as a 6 voice synth you don't have to register it. But, for using it as a 16 channel 256 voice synth with 32 built-in effects and editability of 5 slots per channel for no cost in dollars... just register it!

They are in the download. Along with a bunch of combis and some documentation.smart wrote:I found the DL link, but I couldn't find any sounds - were they only in Keyboard Magazine?
Edit: As posted below, there were two downloads

The link was in Keyboard magazine's May issue. But, since we share around here... and it is miles away from May (sorry 'bout that) here's the link:Ben | KvR wrote:I can't find the download link
www.ikmultimedia.com/keyboardss2.html
In the middle of the page there are the downloads. There are three. One for OSX, one for Windows and one for the sounds which work on either Mac or PC.
The sounds are about 29 megs (so slow dial up users beware). They concentrate more on analog synths but there are a couple of other things thrown in just because.
I wonder, Ben, if Sonik Synth 2 should have its own life in the KVR instruments list as opposed to just being version 2 of Sonic Synth. Its just that the first version was sounds + ST LE and this version is a plug-in of its own. My concern is that reviews of the old one probably talk about the ST LE a lot which may confuse anyone wanting to read reviews of THIS which will be drastically different. Just a thought.
I guess this SS2 FREE could be reviewed itself as a sort of shareware/freeware piece too.
Incidentally, there will be an "official" announcement for the SS2 FREE that is not just the Keyboard magazine version (meaning it will have other sounds) coming soon and a PR to go along with it. That's why it is a quiet announcement right now... makes it more of a "find" though. Next month it will be all over the place with yet another 10-30+ megs of different sounds. This is the part of things that is fun for me because I can talk about it and people get to try things out without even owning the real deal yet. I've been wanting to do this for a long time!
