Well... the shortage is everywhere. Toilet paper, flour, oil, pasta... and now it's plugins as well.vurt wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2022 7:45 pm i need more data.
how has this occurred? what is the impetus for having just one synth? have alien overlords invaded and this is a new rule? is it a financial constraint? hard drive space?
If you could have only one synth, what would you choose?

I know it’s cliche, but for me I think I’d be happiest with my Virus TI

If that was the criteria, then it would be JP6K for me and I'd be f**ked. Synths like DUNE and Thorn are more like my symths of last resort - if nothing else works, they will - which is what makes them qualify as "my only synth". DUNE, in particular, is just way too complicated to be using all the time. I'd never get any work done.tony10000 wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2022 1:15 pmI think Dune is on the vast majority of my tracks...that is why it is my choice.
It's a mental exercise, to make you think about thngs in a different way. WHo knows what insight it could trigger?
I spent 20 years trying to whittle my hardware down to just one synth, I could see no reason to have to cart around a van full when I felt like I could find one to do it all. My Korg Trinity came very close, with its MOSS board and samlping option, but I never quite got there. In software there is absolutely no reason to restrict yourself to one but it's still an interesting thing to comtemplate.dellboy wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2022 5:14 pmOver the years the only hardware synths that I have liked have been subtractive analogue, FM, or just plain old Romplers. Oh, and obviously hardware samplers. So now I am more or less "in the box" with just four hardware synths, (and two of those have recently broken down), I still like the same things in software. "Do it all" synths just do not appeal. As the old saying goes, " Jack of all trades - master of none". So there is no single "do it all synth" that would ever satisfy my needs.

Dune 3 probably... Love the sound, easy to use and has lots of features. Or maybe Icarus Or maybe Zebra.
Second would be Serum or Vital for more techy stuff.

Interesting that no one mentioned Diva or Serum as their first choice.

The Waldorf M would be my choice if I could only have 1 hardware synth.dellboy wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2022 5:14 pm Over the years the only hardware synths that I have liked have been subtractive analogue, FM, or just plain old Romplers. Conditionally... Vital. Under the condition that it receives regular updates. I don't mean that as a slight, and I know that the GUI engine rewrite was/is time consuming. But yeah, assuming that Vital will be supported the way Serum is - and I have no reason to believe otherwise.
Between the 2 filters, and the 3 OSC that can FM, I can get the sounds that I was shooting years ago. My needs aren't too complex, but also to that point, I sort of do need what I mentioned, and Serum isn't quite enough.
GHOST is sort of on my radar but I've realized that 3 OSC, with 2 doing FM, is really enough for me.

I got that beat, mine was given to me when I traded a guy my Virus for his Nord Modular back in 2004 or so. He had 'that old thing' just sitting around and said 'Here take this too and get it out of here'.. I won't ever be putting batteries in it after looking at the bottom but otherwise free SH-101 to rock the house!

Dune 3 would be the easy choice for me. Dual filters, dual arp, dual FX, great MSEGs and a really low CPU hit (the low CPU consumption is a big one).
And IMO its the best sounding of the bunch i own (pigments, vital, hive 2, phaseplant, rapid, europa, etc.)
A runner up would be DS Thorn as its one of the easiest synths to make sound good. Building patches in it is a lot of fun.

I guess Pigments or Synthmaster. Versatile but not overwhelmingly open ended.

Icarus is more versatile? I’d love to hear your explanation.Vortifex wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2022 3:39 pm Choice between Icarus 2 and Dune 3. Icarus is more versatile but I prefer Dune's interface. Can't decide tbh.
