Does Massive sound dated?

It doesn’t sound as dated as Hive 2. Or Hive 2 come to that. If I use 2 instances of Hive 2 and 1 instance of Massive, do I get a Massive Hive 4?

That's the age old question -- How many Hive 2's do you need to make it sound Massive?

I don't use Massive very often but when I do, I'm surprised how much I like the sound.

With all the NI expansions, there are so many patches to explore but the browser doesn't make it easy. (the colour labeling and ratings are all disabled now) Also ya, the GUI is a drag at 4k.

It has a character but not one I would personally called dated. The good thing is it can sound dated if you want.It can also sound quite modern to me. I really like it a lot. It is a synth that still has something. I like its clear direct sound with a bit of dirt. The filters can be a bit of a head scratcher until you either stay with a sweet spot or find the right one for a specific sound.

I think it is a really good synth still. I had some good fun with it not long ago and I love how it looks. It feels very comfortable and still very capable to me.

The super light CPU use is a blessing if your processor is a little older. Great modulation options.

I use it more than the new version X which I find a bit too over the top warm at times.. its a bit too thick. It can be really good and is powerful but I was never overly drawn to it yet.

Depends how many Bee Wing Oscillations are in each Hive. But if you beat the Hive with a stick, I'm sure it will create a Massive problem for you.

for me, many things are 'dated' (massive, wobble basses, picture-tube tvs...). but whatever works for someone... works, and if you can get a sound you like from massive etc... all good

it's all subjective. for me, it sounded dated years ago.... but that doesn't mean anything (except to me)

I don't know if "dated" is the right word here, but I never took to it. It's got a sort of cold vibe to it that never made me really use it that often. On the other hand, Massive X tickles my ears just right.

On another level, pretty much everything NI releases seems "dated" to me in terms of functionality. The fact that I can get a fully featured MPE and polyphonic aftertouch enabled plugin that lets me build my own wavetables from scratch for free and NI doesn't have anything equivalent is clearly a symptom of a company that is resting on its laurels.
