That was the Matrix device, which you had to program with the mouse and then copy the notes to the track from a right-click menu. There was a way to wire it so you could create gated notes with it (when the sequencer was running - play and record) when using a midi keyboard, but it wasn't what I'd call step-time programming like one could do in Logic, Studio One or a tracker without the sequencer running.donkey tugger wrote: Fri Aug 11, 2023 6:22 pm
Ahh, apologies!
Surely it always had that one right from the start, with the red lines?

I'm not sure how that is relevant (besides which, I think in terms of raw numbers, FL Studio is probably way more popular than any other DAW, just that it's not really gonna appeal to most of the KVR crowd). The point I was trying to make is that FL Studio is what it is. Either you like it or you don't. If you don't, there's really no point trying to turn it into something else when that something else already exists in 100 flavours.Trancit wrote: Fri Aug 11, 2023 1:07 pm Just have a look at this poll here... 95% have settled on no pattern based DAWs... 95%...
This gives a good hint of the splitting in user groups of FLS users too...
It's like buying a guitar and then complaining that it doesn't behave like a piano. Some people prefer guitar, some people prefer piano, but very few people expect them to be the same to play. It's OK if you don't like guitar. It's just silly to expect guitar manufacturers to change guitars into pianos because you prefer pianos.

I don't agree at all, and the more I actually compare FL functionality with different products like Ableton, it's sometimes way more sensible and even ahead of its time in some respects. That's to the "it isn't a pro DAW" point. Like, come on.FL Studio is a great "my first DAW" type of app, with some addictive sandbox-like "playability".
And on the other hand, "my first"-ness of FL Studio is debatable, cause it's not that nice to newcomers.
As an everyday pro user/teacher, I'm happy with the update. I personally reported a bunch of bugs, and I think all of them were fixed in this one, maybe apart from one.

I've observed that whatever "gamelikeness" and "un-pro-ness" is seen by some of us in FL Studio, it is to the app's benefit in its (rather large nowadays) segment of the market. And it's still easy to just click in some beats, sequence some loops and have fun. That's important, I think.
The whole "pro DAW" connotation is something of an emotional honey trap anyway. REAPER for example is used in some roles at BBC and in game industry, to mention a couple of "pro" use cases. And yet it also is, in its own way, quite a toybox - for music makers, script writers and theme designers.
Yep, the IL team looks to be working hard to serve their current core audience. Can't really find faults there.Vospi wrote: Fri Aug 11, 2023 8:24 pm As an everyday pro user/teacher, I'm happy with the update. That said, based on what I've seen on DAW forums in general - and especially on IL's Looptalk - some people appear to enjoy software-mediated masochism wayyyyyyyy more than I do
