He was on a lot of drugs. He wanted to do something avant-garde with Yoko. George was in on it, too. It isn't really a song, let alone a Beatles song. It being on the album was probably John pushing back at Paul over his control-freakedness.

If you wanted to be in on the art music scene invading pop music at that time, then musique concrète was where it was at. A lot of it sounds like Revolution No. 9 and it probably took untold amount of time to splice all those sounds together.

I take an interest in those early electronic music pioneers, but the pieces can definitely be a challenge to listent to. Still more enjoyable than serialist music.
