Meh.

However, the Soundtoys plugins, even in the rack, can finally be modulated externally as well. They already have their own modulators, but it was a bit tricky to control them together.

Edit: looks like it was from the 9th October., so I missed it by 2 days. Ah, no, it was the 8th, so 1 day.
This is actually sickening. I updated to 13 in early September and haven't even booted it up yet, but now I need to pay to upgrade because it's outside the 1-month grace period. Did Steinberg Cubase grace periods not used to be much longer than this? In September I was also able to update Dorico Pro to 5.5 from (I think) 3.5 for free using multiple "grace period" vouchers.

Great update. I hopped on it as soon as I saw it. Wasn't expecting it quite this soon though.

About the grace period - I thought it was always a not-so-smart way to try and beat the system.
If you're going to update, just do it when it comes out and use it.

For people who have a first-time buy in, it's a bit of a gamble if they don't know the normal time frame. And even then, that can change.

The interweb tells me that 12 to 13 had a longer period. I got pulled in with a 70% discount code, which they obviously timed to be outside the grace period... unless users had the psychic ability to postpone activation for a week or two. Ah... seems obvious in hindsight. Since this is the first time I've used Steinberg products for 15 years or so I don't know the tactics for upgrading. I assume there'll be discounts on upgrades at some point, but since we're already apparently in Black Friday Month/Season (which is becoming more nebulous each year) maybe there's no scope for a discount any time soon?
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

Saddly. I don't think possible to modulate an external hardware such a synth

I’ll probably go see what they’re saying on the Cubase forums but has anyone noticed the modulation isn’t ‘fast’? It’s like they all have a slew rate adding a ramp time to the change. When I want a saw shape mod, I want that vertical edge to hit immediately. I couldn’t find a slew control.
Still… lots of cool ideas in 14.
Yes, i tried the step modulator modulating hz legend osc 1 pitch. It does sound like there's some smoothing going on. I also want instant change when using squared modulation.

Post

okay soooooo this is going to sound dumb... cubase 14 has taken what i love about logic and s1 and combined them.

open/close track editor commands for each plugin like logic i love! qwerty keyboard working when i touch plugin parameters on mac which has been broken for me on s1 for a long time (causes hangs if your playing qwerty keyboard as you touch a parameter on a synth or plugin) i havent dove into media bay but it seems a lot better then s1s browser. better samplers then s1. more instruments. ARA. and for me the modulators havent been slow to work with on my system so maybe its buggy on certain OS versions rn or something.

this is my first time using cubase but i kinda thing im in love. UI seems a little bloated like logic can be but also clean how logic can be at the same time.

Maybe this instead of Studio One 7?

Being able to move a mix channel in the MIXER.....yay!

Grum 😀

A month outside the grace period you’re likely stuffed. But, if someone missed the grace period by literally 1 day, contact them. They’ll probably say “thems the rules”, but you might get a result since they’d rather have long term happy customers than upset short term ones.. Worth a try.

Some similar features already exist as MIDI inserts, which you can use with hardware. This is just Cubase properly integrating things with host automation for control of plugin parameters (finally ;) ) ..then putting them in a more obvious place so that people might actually use them. :)

How good is the controller support? Any news on MIDI 2.0?
Cubase is midi 2 compatible since v13
It allow you to create and manage your own midi device controler
Thanks for the info :tu:

One of the best updates in a long time  The new drum track alone is a killer feature. The modulators are a great thing. The upgraded mixer and the fact that you can now also move tracks in the panel view.

Cubase 14 marks the end of official compatibility support for VST 2 plug-ins
does that mean cannot use now or there is an 'unofficial' way to use vst 2 in C14?
Get a Copy of Voltage Modular by Cherry Audio. You can load that in as a VST3 and then host VST2 inside of it. It's technically a virtual Eurorack emulator, but you can host multiple VST2 and VST3 inside of it if you wish, it's very light on system resources also. You can also load VM in Logic and Protools and run any VST2 or VST3 inside of it

This actually holds many advantages outside of compatibility. I host every instrument inside of an instance of VM even VST3 and have for a while

Because it an emulation of a Eurorack you have unlimited LFOs that you can use to control anything available to automation inside of the plugin. You can take the output of a synth and plug it into multiple effects in whatever order you want, you can load multiple instruments and create layered patches that all go into the same effects, you can use MIDI CC controllable mixers, you can use step sequencers, different filters, etc
