Does everyone around here work alone?

yes, work alone
for many of the reasons S_A_P listed
but, i sit in a sunny room with two walls of windows, not back in the dark bedroom
usually have the TV on, but no sound, headphones on
work as long as things are coming together
stop when blocked
pick it up again later
i think i would find it hard to be 'on' at a designated time with others
'cause for me this is composing, not playing something already known. i can do that a lot easier with others
more importantly is if one can satisfy the doubt that this one is the only one who ever listens

Good point. On my own I have to decide which of the two to do, and that's too hard a decision.xoxos wrote:take turns rolling blunts :pTennesseeVic wrote:Do you take turns editing a track?

Cypher pretty much summed it up:
-none of my friends share this interest
-not good enough to really jam/collaborate
-it's a hobby.
pretty much, music is me time, when I want to get away, and the songs, hate to say it, are secondary right now. Fun is first.
I do however love to contribute/collaborate lyrics, something I feel several orders more comfortable with.

I work alone, yeah...
With nobody else.
Y'know when I work alone,
I prefer ta be by myself.
Eve'ry morning, just before breakfast
Don't want no accompanist.
Just me an' my good buddy Sonar --
When I play bad, he never gets pist.
'Cause I work alone...
With nobody else.
Yeah, ya know when I work alone
I prefer t' be by myself.
Th' other night I was playin'
And I laid down an awful track.
So I brought up my ol' Moog Modular
And spent hours fiddlin' with the attack.
Yeah, I work alone,
With nobody else.
Y'know, when I work alone....
I prefer t' be by myself.
Got invited to a jam session.
When time came for me ta play,
I cranked out a big ol' solo --
Everyone up an' ran away!
That's why I play alone...
With nobody else.
Y'know, when I play alone,
I prefer t' be by myself.
My old friends all gave up on me,
'Cause my music turns 'em green.
They'd rather I leave my keyboard,
And they hide the tambourine!
They say "Mef, play alone!
With nobody else...
After hearing how you play, yeah,
We prefer you work by yourself."

*bow* Thank ya.

Thus far I've tried to "recruit" two female singers and one male rapper to work on some tracks w/ me, in each case they expressed interest and then kind of faded out of communication. I do play in a rock band, but my experience with those settings is about the same; only about one out of every 10 (maybe more) people I talk to actually has the motive and drive to make the follow through effort to actually create music instead of just talking and daydreaming about it.
Ideas are bulletproof... I am not.

Tuz is my 'right hand man', and Lady J on my left so it 'feels like someone different' - if you know what I mean? (Read Duddy Kravitz!
) But I've been remixed by a few, my songs used by others, and I've helped many with theirs (hopefully?
)
One of these days I'd like to be in a studio, cut my ear off so I can be like Brian Wilson - and get EVERYONE working with me!

This, imo, is the difference that counts. There are people who finish tracks and there are people who don't. Sometimes I even meet people who are planning to one day start a track that they predict will one day be completed. Those folks are a bore. But they always seem to have an opinion on reverbs and compressors.videzyrah wrote:Thus far I've tried to "recruit" two female singers and one male rapper to work on some tracks w/ me, in each case they expressed interest and then kind of faded out of communication. it happened to me to colaborate a lot in the beginning, when i started to learn about electronic music and synths......
i really enjoyed that as working with someone ( moreoevr a friend) is quite interesting as i found some kind of synergy (ideas multiplicating....)
and it's also less tiring to work with someone, as you need less concentration
but i think working alone is also quite important to find it's own style. i mean if you only work with ppl, then you only can do what they showed you, so after a while, it's just a copy/paste of music, presets....
i'm not really 100% satisfied with what i do with others as you have to be "open-minded" and music is a personal thing
but like said ouroboros, fun is the most important thing to get, alone or toegther

Work alone? No. Me, myself, and I. So there are three of us.
Seriously, though, the technology we use makes solo work a dream come true. I've never wanted to collaborate with other visual artists (that's really what I do in "real" life) and that same mindset carries over to my less professional music work. Some artists thrive on community and collaboration- others have a more solitary vision.

Well, collaboration isn't the essential factor in creating great music (good compositions), since one person playing one instrument beautifully has been going on for a very long time. I'm sure you didn't mean otherwise. In an ensemble/band setting it's obviously necessary since it's hard to play drums, guitar, bass, keys, etc. all at once.nuffink wrote:You're right. Good music usually comes from specialists collaborating. To many of us (guilty) are trying to be Mike Oldfield and failing.
And let's face it, Mike was ----.
However, I know of numerous solo efforts that generated good music. A number of cuts from Ozric Tentacles "Spirals in Hyperspace" were all done by Ed Wynne and are amazing tours de force, even if not to everyone's liking. I'm amazed by what can be done with what's available out there in VST land- just as raw sonic material. Anyway... rambling here.

I've worked with others in bands. I usually wrote the parts and showed everyone what to play. More things can go wrong with people than a computer. I started out working alone and now I'm back to it.
