Indeed, VOX'd is a great set, but doesn't not intend to provide a real choir. A lot of fun, 275 different soundsets (='instruments')hollowsun wrote:Having listened to the demos (thanks for the link, Hans), these are very different to the kid's choir Francis has. The Wusik ones are much more along the lines of a typical 'ROMpler' like Roland XV or Korg Triton or whatever - very 'synthetic'. Wouldn't surprise me either if the number of multi-samples are limited (one per octave or whatever). That's not to criticise them - they sound very good and very impressive (there's some enviable programming in there) but....Snowbeamdesert wrote:How come Voxed by Wusikstation is so cheap then...hmm.
I checked it using ESC: All the samples are single layer, and varying between 1 and max 20 samples for each soundset. (Not to go into detail here, but to answer the question about "what's the difference")

So it seems to us that it is not so much an AKAI thing as it is taking a massive set and offering a lite/compact version.
With that in mind I would like to ask what format is your main weapon?
PS. Thank you KvR and its members. This is all very helpful.

But the full GS3 verison can be used in GigaStudio 2.5.

But many other samplers (and converters) can load GS2 - not GS3.

It is widely supported and easily converted, and is flexible enough for such a library. I think it was the 'Old Lady' I saw distributed as GS2 only but with mappings for other players. You loaded and converted the GS2 in the sampler of your choice and then threw away the converted mappings and used the supplied ones. That way you can fit a whole bunch of formats on one disk.

I'd say Halion personally...I think most samplers can load this format without errors (whereas Kontakt format and to a lesser extent GS, seem to be prone to less than perfect translation...not surprising in the case of Kontakt as NI aren't helpful on the details of the Kontakt structure from what I've read).
I guess it depends on whether the lite version will have extensive modulations (can't think of the correct term right now) that are only supported in some formats...

My first responce would be the named files. Then import and map to what I use, Vsampler, Dimension, SFZ+(GIGA). My second choise would be SoundFont. Since this will be a cut down version of the full set S-Font would work well. Most Softsamplers do support this? With 5 second loops this would be a quality offer so I'm interested. And the raw samples would be easy to sell I assume? Mapping a set limited to the vocal range with every note would take all of a few minits.

Soundfont or any other format easily convertible to sf2 using ESC.Bela D Media wrote:With that in mind I would like to ask what format is your main weapon?
I think I understand your point in the context you originlly wrote but I would like to add an obvious remark: "soundfont" is only a *format*. Although pretty limited it is still very convenient for some applications, like those that do not require a lot of filtering or modulation. I would put most acoustic reproductions on this class, (children's) choirs included.Bela D Media wrote:You will never find high end children's choir samples for $50.00. Never. This is not a Sound Font were are talking about.
It seems to be a common misconception that soundfonts are "cheap sounding" per se - but that is not true. They are just a bunch of 16-bit/44.1KHz or whatever samples, organized in a particular way. The quality really depends on what you put on them to begin with.

If you're planning to release 16bit samples, than soundfonts is as good as any... otherwise I'd personally prefer named files, I'll have to create my own Wusikstation soundset anyway. (Of course I could also help create a Wusik soundset for you to sell..., actually anyone having Wusikstation could do that. And it's capable of using 32bit mono samples).

Selling a lite/compact version using 16bit samples (sf2 format) will differentiate it clearly from the 32bit high-end product.
This would also give a good justification for a "high-end"/high-priced product and a "entry-level"/moderately-priced product.
