Update - External MIDI Test

As a quick test - I just connected the YRG to my Macbook Pro and Garageband '09.

I Fired up the Keyboard "new song" template
Much Better experience!!!

A much wider velocity response range is observed - pretty decent actually! - and Full Dynamics at last!!

And zero latency!

Now I'm very happy! :)

( but I know myself well enough to know this is only a temporary feeling ;)

Well it doesn't have to be perfect, just reasonably responsive. That is very good news. How are the note-offs? Similar to a real guitar? One of the Yamaha's real weak spots.

Post

All midi-triggered plug-in samples have some latency, not the guitar's fault, just the PC hardware driver/buffer etc issue. If you're lucky you can hold it down to around 10ms.

phew i was about to get very sad there!, but two comments

you can adjust the strings, it says how in the manual.
have you tried to update your firmware, or are you positive that
the its the newest firmware???, cause the velocity should improve alot
after the new upgrade.

Note Off events DO occur when you release finger pressure from the membrane fretboard.

Maybe Inspired Instruments can make an upgraded optional plugin Neck with a Fretboard that provides Polyphonic MIDI Aftertouch"

in the fish interview part 2, he's trying the yourockguitar external midi and
adjusted the buffersize, did you try that also ?

Post

I'm happy - no latency

BTW - buffer size refers to Audio devices

I'm strictly using the YRG as a Master MIDI Controller, and triggering Apple GarageBand 09 softsynths.

Perfect tracking - no glitching, no latency.

and a wide full dynamic range of MIDI velocity values are being sent. Most Excellent.

Exactly, the buffer in your DAW, Garageband, results in latency. And that results in a delay in hearing the midi samples you're triggering. Again, not the YRG's fault. All DAWs have latency when hearing a sample triggered by a midi device.

so internal are almost useless??, i kinda was hoping for better review on that part, since, i wanted to sit outside in the garden and play with headset.

btw did you get any gameflex or other accessory to the YRG ??

okay, nice to be around pro's i know almost nothing about this
in the fish interview part 2, he is using guitar pro.

Modern hardware and new drivers result in minimal latency/lag. It's hard to hear anything less than 12ms or so. Back in the day before ASIO drivers and such latency was a major issue.

Well, sounds like we got a winner on our hands. No problems with note-offs? When your finger comes of the keyboard does the note end instantly? Can you palm mute with the right hand a la a real guitar?

I ordered one in January - was even charged for it 2 days ago, but I heard that these will not ship until July.

None

Correct

Can you palm mute with the right hand a la a real guitar?
No

Perhaps this could be simulated when driving an external Multisample with a velocity crossfade.

But if you think about - there is nothing they can do to duplicate / simulate the effect of "palm muting" on the YRG.

there is a palm mute on the yourockguitar

When I say YRG lacks ability to perform a "palm mute" technique - this is a traditional guitar technique where you rest the edge of your hand directly on top of the bridge - to act as a damper. Playing in this manner still still allows pitched notes to emerge. its common in many styles - from Surf Guitar to Metal.

If I place my hand very near where the strings emerge from the YRG's "Bridge" - it only reduced the available velocity dynamic range.

I know the YRG Manual says the black cover over the bridge is called "The Mute Bar" - but so far I cant see it doing anything. - I suspect this "Mute Bar" only works in game controller mode for Rock Band - to enable "Star Power" - whatever that is.

---

EDIT:

I just discovered The "Mute bar" - is actually two small metal rails at the rear edge of the of the bridge. you rest your hand there and all sounds Mute and MIDI Note Off events are sent.

So still no "Palm Muting" technique - in the traditional guitar playing sense.

Examples of "palm Muting are the intro to "The Cars" Just what I needed" is a prime example.
