i don't really get it. how many synths does one need that do 'bread & butter' sounds?

what i want, currently, is synths that go other places. i have more-than enough normal sounds...

At the very end it doesn´t matter... main thing is it shall be more "normal"...
That´s the advantage for a sound designer for Current at the moment... the provided sounds are that extreme that there is a huge huge gap to fill...

Just do normal pads, normal arps, normal leads...etc... just like nearly every synth has got out of the box... :tu:

A do-everything-ish synth like this one should have a good and wide-ranging selection of bread and butter sounds which also incorporate a little bit of the synth's unique possibilities by default. With macros that let you add in or vary the amount of the more unique features of the synth while still letting you play your own original melodies or chords.

Minimal Audio iirc claimed that you can get simpler and more playable sounds by just turning down the macros, which I guess are set at high levels by default? It would be better if they were set at low levels by default. The previews could start with a simple melody or chord progression and then do some crazy stuff.

OTOH I do partly agree with you. For most bread and butter sounds I'll be using other synths (mostly Equator2, probably Synthmaster 3 as well). Personally I would like Current presets that leverage its combination of spectral capabilities, FM implementation, and filter/distortion/delay with unique wavetables and samples (in combination with optional granular)... while also sounding good, expressively playable, and applicable to a broad range of genres.

If they were set at low levels by default.
But if they did that people would be complaining that it sounds too bread and butter!!

:D

That's my thoughts too!

I think a lot of people's opinions on Current and its presets are more driven by musical taste than anything else. I think they're really interesting and a nice break from the supersaw pads, moog bass, euro techno and trance that we get in other synths.

Don't get me wrong there's a place for everything but Minimal are obviously going for the future bass, dubstep, neurofunk, colorbass world as well as some lo-fi and organic cinematic sounds.

Having Rift, Fuse and Morph EQ built into the synth makes it very easy to get those kind of sounds.

As I've said before Current is a very modern sounding synth and that's its strength, imo.

It has no allusions towards being vintage or analog sounding.

it is a bit of a no-win situation with presets.
...organic cinematic sounds.
the trouble here is that they're not that organic or usable unless you're doing scenes like the chunk of modeselektor (or is it moderat? can't remember) that's in Annihilation towards the end or the dubstep bit in Deadpool2.

minimal needs to get some of the specialists who do those sounds involved for a couple of packs as the house sound designers aren't really getting it.

Other places is great - but we don't need sounds where one key plays 5 notes (not using a sequencer).
So *usable* unusual sounds... ;)
while still letting you play your own original melodies or chords.

Because some people like sticking to one synth they like best to be their workhorse.

huh? does anyone only use one synth plugin?

find a synth that can be your workhorse, then add ones that bring something else to your workflow. simple. :tu:

And that’s why I bought it (the $120 year deal), to be interesting and different-sounding than what I already have (which is a lot, like most of us). However I agree with the others that I like the presets/sounds to be usable in a project.

But (very?) bad news...
Don't fear... it's just a template that got modified in the kerfuffle. -- We're not planning any major version bumps on those products. -- I'll revert it on those pages.
2 months later and still not reverted or any answer...Did you remove your free update policy????

I hardly use presets anymore, making sounds from the init makes my mixes much cleaner, in presets there are a lot of hidden trash, so then i first have to figure out how the preset has been made and turn off all kinds of volumes or fx to make it sound decent, if I make my sounds from the init I just make what I need at that certain point and I know exactly how it has been made and what i need to adjust if something is not sounding as pleased. Current is a great synth for sound design and it's tempting to make the sounds easy as well as more complicated, I like it a lot, only there is no mod matrix yet, hopefully it will be implemented soon.

Does it have a "loopback", "loop point", "sustain" (or whatever else they might be called) function in the curve module?

Post

Does this synth have a standalone app or is it only a plugin?
